Guest computerchallengedcc Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Recently installed Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini external drive. Comes with software. Googled & found this: "The process SyncServices or Sync Windows Services belongs to the software Maxtor OneTouch III or Maxtor Manager by Seagate Technology LLC." Never having used an external hard connected to USB ports, I didn't know anything about having to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" & simply unplugged the drive. Ever since, I am getting this error when shutting down my pc. "The instruction at 0X0012e614 refernced memory at 0x00001310 The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program or click on cancel to debug the program. Upper left of the error message says," Sync Services.exe Appliccation error. I have tried to really hard to troubleshoot at the Seagate website, & have not found this particular error anywhere. I did try to see if it would be possible to uninstall the software program through Add/Remove safely, and found that Seagate says 'remnants' could/would remain. ( *see insert info from Seagate) I am a pc novice in this whole area, do not understand the inner workings of windows, etc. i don't know what to do, and am so afraid if this continues something really bad can happen to my pc. It was suggested by someone with just abit more knowledge that I end the process for this Sync Services.exe in the Task Manager before shutting down my pc... I do not clearly understand why tho- and when I was going to do that I saw in the Task Manager where it was listed with User name of 'System' when I clicked on 'end process' a warning came up from there that sounded very ominous so I did not end it in Task Mgr. When the pc shut down, the error message flashes for a secon, then pc shut down. I have tried to give you as much information as possible to help me. PLEASE, I cannot risk anything happening to my pc, I don't know if I can or should, try to uninstall, if that will fix things, or not. Please try to help me. Thank you. Carole * Maxtor software will provide an uninstallation option from within the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. As with any software package, the uninstallation of software can still leave remnants of the package such as folders containing configuration files or registry entries after the uninstallation procedure. These files and settings are usually benign and will cause no conflict, however if there is any question about them causing compatibility problems with other programs or drivers you can remove them using the following procedures. Answer OneTouch drivers: OneTouch drivers will normally remain on the system after uninstallation in case you want to reconnect the device. This is normal for most Windows drivers. • Choose Start | Search | For files or folders... • Enter mxo* in the search field parameter. Make sure to use the * as a "wildcard". Set this to search your entire boot volume, usually C:\ • Delete the files beginning with "mxo" - these are Maxtor OneTouch drivers. • Reboot the computer. Maxblast: Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Maxblast. No folders or settings will be left behind. Retrospect • Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Retrospect, all/any versions. • Choose Start | Search | For files or folders... • Enter Retro* in the search field parameter. Set this to search your entire boot volume, usually C:\ • Delete "Retrospect" and/or "RetroExp" folders. Maxtor Quickstart • Use Add/Remove Programs to remove Maxtor Quickstart. • Choose Start | Search | For files or folders... • Enter Maxtor Quick Start in the search field parameter. Set this to search your entire boot volume, usually C:\ • Delete any folders named "Maxtor Quick Start" Maxtor Shared Storage Log Files There will be log files saved in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Maxtor\ To remove these, simply delete the \Maxtor\ folder. No uninstallation procedure is necessary. Registry Note: Maxtor provides no support for modifying the registry. Do so at your own risk and only if you have a backed up copy of your registry. It is not necessary to remove Maxtor entries from the registry, however to do so please consult your Windows documentation or Microsoft's website at http://www.microsoft.com The following search keywords will find registry values that have been entered by Maxtor software. maxtor maxblast onetouch quickstart
