Guest Scotirish Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Am now running XP Home Edition with SP2. To get SP3, do I have to download and install from Windows Update or are their other Microsoft sites I can download from, preferring to "Save" to disc rather than set it on "Run" and take my chances? Any input. suggestions or "do's and don'ts that you can offer on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you have a 2nd drive other then the C: drive, do an image of your C: drive. Backups could be of value. And download and run the update rather than from MS updates. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en A place to get FREE support for SP3 installation issues *from Microsoft*... http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131 WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 Release Notes for Windows XP Service Pack 3 http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/8/cd8cc719-7d5a-40d3-a802-e4057aa8c631/relnotes.htm This would also fix the issue for those planning on updating to SP3 as well. Apply this before you install SP3. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=953356 Key things to note: Internet Explorer: "If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3, uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

First, you should revert to IE6 (if you haven't already) before the service pack upgrade. Once SP3 is successfully installed, then you may upgrade to IE7. And it is highly recommended you image your hard drive before the upgrade. It's always good to have all the bases covered. In case you have a PC with an AMD processors *and* an OEM image (certain HPs match this description), you should read the following: "Does your AMD-based computer boot after installing XP SP3?" http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx (or http://tinyurl.com/6zs52d ) It's also a good idea to perform a clean boot before the upgrade. See the following two links for more preparatory ideas: "Windows XP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation" http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx (or http://tinyurl.com/6nf4k4 ) "Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 If you have done all your homework, Windows Update should work for you. But downloading the whole package serves a second purpose: it will allow you to create an installation disk slipstreamed with SP3, which would be very useful for repairs.
