Guest Jane Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I have an old computer that I want to get rid of, but there are some files on there that I want to save over first. The old computer is running Windows 95. My current in on XP Home Edition. I have tried using a Flash/USB drive and an external hard drive which connects through USB on the old computer, but neither was recognized. I purchased a Parallel File Transfer Cable, but when I try to connect, I receive error 771 - the network is busy. I'm sure that there are steps I need to take that would cause the computers to be able to talk to one another, but I need a set of step by step instructions. Can anyone help?? I'm not sure if this is the right user group for the question. If not, anyone know a more appropriate place for me to ask my question?

Put old drive in new computer, jumpering it as appropriate. 2. Copy files. - OR- 1. Burn files to a CD with old computer 2. Copy files from CD to new computer. They will be "read only", change if needed. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. Guest JS Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Re: Direct Connection Question If your new computer supports PATA drives like what's in your Win95 pc, then just remove the drive and connect it to your current PC. Note: You most likely will need to change the jumper on the Win95 drive to 'Slave' so it does not conflict with your existing drive in the newer PC. You've already received advice outlining the best way to deal with this issue, but if moving the HD from your old computer into your new computer is not an option here's an 8 part tutorial from Microsoft on the subject of direct cable connections that you may find helpful. How to Configure a Direct Cable Connection with Windows XP Home Edition http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814981/ Here's another article with some things to check on the two computers.
