Hi, I mistakenly bought an Acer machine with no OS. So I bought a new Windows 7 home premium disk. I went through the whole install bit until it came to where do you want to install. 2 options, partition 1 - with FreeDos on it and unallocated space. Partition 1 is only 4gb. There are no option on the unallocated space.

So I thought I would try to install on the unallocated space, but get a message saying

'Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.

Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition as NTFS.'

What do I do? Do I format the whole thing, but I am worried I will then have nothing on there at all.

HELP :(

Hi Matt and welcome to ExTS

FreeDos is a DOS-based OS.

EFI is a type of FAT-based format - suitable for FreeDos but not Win7.

If you have Win7 you don't need it.

I would be tempted delete the partition ( using the Win7 disk ) and format the whole disk as one partition.

Install Win7.

If you wish you can create a second partition later from DiskManagement. ( I am not a Win7 user and I am assuming that it is similar to Vista in this respect ).

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

What you need to do is delete these partitions completely before you can install Windows 7.
