Cursor jumps to notification area

Hi,

whenever I plug in my external WD HD the mouse cursor will jump into the

notification area and click on random icons. This problem has only recently

started to occur. After the problem appeared I suspected a problem with the

usb drivers which I then un- and reinstalled. Next I reinstalled the mouse

drivers, then I messed with the settings for the mouse and lastely I updated

to SP3. I also checked for viruses and such.

This problem occurs w/ and w/o the optical Logitech mouse plugged in.

HP TC4200 Tablet, XP Pro SP3

Right now I don't know what else to do, can anyone help me here?

Thank you

Are you using the Logitech set point software for the mouse? if so then

check under settings to see if you have set 'enable smart move' & if so

remove the tick from the box, if you're not using set point or there is no

tick in the box then check under control panel>mouse>pointer options make

sure 'automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box'

isn't ticked. You may have already checked this though. :)

HTH,

Edna.

Re: Cursor jumps to notification area

Hi Edna,

thank you for your advice, however, as you already guessed, I've been there

already. :)

I've since uninstalled SP3 and reinstalled SP2, uninstalled almost the

entire HP software stuff I had (since the cursor clicked on HP stuff 5 out of

6 times or more often), and updated the BIOS to the newest available version.

I also talked with the HP support, which was next to useless, nothing new or

helpful. They actually advised me to do a windows repair install, and then

corrected themselves telling me to do a clean install. I think, I don't need

to state my opinion about such an advice...

I am really stomped by this problem.

Maybe someone has some more advice for me, which would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Re: Cursor jumps to notification area

How does the mouse connect ? PS/2 or USB & is it a wireless unit with

a Receiver ? USB based receivers can cause erratic results if it is placed

near interference or something that blocks it's reception.

Also if connected via USB it may be on a heavily loaded Root Hub. It

can sometimes be resolved by relocating the receiver to a different socket.

Re: Cursor jumps to notification area

Hi McCarty,

it's a wired, optical, usb mouse. However, there is still the integrated

mousepad.

Whenever i remove the Western Digital harddrive (160GB actual version) the

problem disappears.

Maybe I should try killing the mousepad...

Thank you for your help, hope to get some more advice

Just a thought.. try a powered USB hub for the WD HD. I suspect it's

using too much of the available power.

Re: Cursor jumps to notification area

Hi Joe,

tried that already too, didn't help either. :(

Until recently the entire setup was working just fine. What's weird though,

is the entire problem arising coincides with me (successfully) trying to get

rid of the explorer crashes due to Adobe Flash. However, I believe that's

just a coincidence, I can't think of link between the two issues.

Thank you for your advice though

RE: Cursor jumps to notification area

Could it be that this issue is related to the tablet's pen?

I've tried to remove reinstall the drivers for but no improvements. But

somehow I keep hhaving the feeling that there is a conflict between the pen

and certain usb devices...

LOL

Hi Joe,

I already wanted to reply to tell you that I tried that already and it

didn't work, either. However, since I was desperate I tried it again - and it

worked. I am not sure what part of the pen (virtual or the pen driver), right

now all 5 elements r 'resting', but it's one of them.

Well, the prob had at least one advantage, my sys has not been this clean

and good running in the past 4 years ;)

I still can't believe it that was one of the first things I tried right when

the prob occured... maybe the prob was multilayered....

Thank you
