Install but not use TS License Server?

I'm in the process of planning for a new Citrix PS 4.5 farm. New

hardware and OS. Current farm is W2K TS. License server is one of the

W2K DCs (domain is all W2K until next year).

 

I want to set up the new license server on a W2003 R2 server I have

running. However, I only have 50 TSCALs. Ultimately, there will be up to

100-125 workstations logging into the new farm.

 

Can I set up the new license server without impacting the current setup?

I can't have the workstations checking into the new server until I get

the additional TSCALs....

Are you upgrading to W2K3 or W2K8?

 

If W2K8, it is more restrictive with user based licensing but

I believe you still get a 90 day temporary license.

 

Either way, you can tell your 2K3/2K8 server to point to whatever

license server you want, so you should be OK with multiple license

servers.

 

I do not know how Citrix licensing works, so I cannot help you

there.

Let me clarify. Currently, the domain is W2K. One of the DCs is the W2K

license server. Citrix runs on top of TS. My current Citrix servers

(W2K) are the only ones running in Application Mode. Currently all users

logging onto these servers authenticate with the W2K LS. Since all are

W2K and XP Pro, they get the "free" licenses issued.

 

I'm planning to build a new set of W2K3 TS servers that all be my new

Citrix farm. I have a W2K3 server that I want to set up as the W2K3 LS.

I want this to be the LS that issues licenses to workstations when they

log onto the new farm. I'd like to have it up and running before I build

the new servers/farm.

 

My concern is that the current users continue to use the W2K LS until I

have the new farm set up and start switching workstations to log onto

the new servers.

 

I guess what I'm looking for is assurances that when I set the W2K3 LS

up, install the licenses and activate it that current users won't be

impacted until they log onto the new farm. This is because I don't have

sufficient licenses to cover all the workstations that will ultimately

access the new servers.

OK. This sounds fine and I understand the "free" license issue.

I believe you will fine as long as your 2K systems point to the 2K

license server and your 2K3 system point to your 2K3 license server.

I had a dual setup myself a few years ago and I do not remember having

any issues.

 

Now for the W2K3 setup situation..

 

What type of licenses are you buying, User or Device?

 

Windows 2K3 does not count User licenses.

 

Are you planning on moving ALL your users at once?

 

If yes and you are using User licenses then you will have

nothing to worry about. Just make sure that you purchase

the correct amount of licenses in the future.

 

TS gives each user a temporary 90 day license so you

have a couple months to configure and install the servers you need.

In addition, the temporary licenses is from the day EACH user

initially logs into the system.

 

So if on Day 1 you only have 20 User licenses and 100 people want

to log in, your users will still be able to log on to the system

and you will have 3 months to order your 80 additional licenses.

We're getting "Per Device" licenses.

 

Once the new Citrix farm is up and running, yes, we will begin a rapid

transition. I plan to have the remaining licenses available and

installed before we begin the transition.
