Guest Richard Morey Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Hi -- I work for a small development company and we are currently using hosted services for web, e-mail and share point. We are considering bringing this in house and I have a question about licensing. We are looking at a 2-CPU machine to run Windows 2008 along with Microsoft Exchange Server. We currently have a total of 15 users but may expand beyond this point. Do we need licenses for both Windows and Exchange ? I have found "Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 10 Client - Retail" online, however, this does not specifically say how many CPUs it supports. I also found "Microsoft Windows Server Standard 2008 32/64bit 1-4CPU 5CLT - OEM" which I assume supports up to 4 CPUs and comes with 5 client license. However, we are not an OEM so I would prefer to buy the "RETAIL" version to get support from Microsoft. If someone could help me understand better which products support multiple CPUs and how the client licenses work that would be great! Thanks Rich

They can tell you. Guest Kerry Brown Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Re: Windows 2008 Licensing Question Here's a comparison of the technical features of the various editions. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/compare-specs.aspx Small Business Server may fit your needs. It includes Exchange. It usually comes with five CALs. The CALs cover Exchange and if you get the Premium version SQL. There is a 75 CAL maximum. The current version, 2003, is 32 bit only. The 2008 version is due to be released later this year. It is 64 bit only. It supports the same number of CPU sockets as Server Standard. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/essential/sbs/default.mspx -- Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience: Systems Administration http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "Richard Morey" <rwmorey71@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:eK3knFF3IHA.4536@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Hi -- > > I work for a small development company and we are currently using hosted > services for web, e-mail and share point.
