hi all me again,right i have an old sony vaio (pcg-9w4m) thats what the model number says on the back,but on the screen it says vgn-bx195vp so not sure what the actual model number is.Anyway this was given to me by an old custermor of mine as it had lines running down the screen apart from that it functioned great very fast and no problems at all.I tried to reformat it with my mates xp disc and now i cant even connect to the internet although it worked perfectly before,it dosent seem to have any network stuff on it now.Ive obviously done something wrong so could anyone shed light on it as i would like to hook it up to the tv and use it for surfing in the front room any help would be great many thanks in advance.oh it was an xp home edition i tried winxp pro sp3.

Hi,

to boot from cd

Depends what you wanted to do.

You would have been prompted to "press any key to boot from CD"

From here you would have had options - one of them would have been a repair install of XP.

Is this what you did?

Have you still got all of your files / data or did it get wiped ?

it was an xp home edition i tried winxp pro sp3.

You cannot repair Home with Pro.

Have you lost all of your data and now have XP Pro on your machine.

xp pro is now installed

I have to tell you that, if your friend still has XP Pro on his machine, your installation is illegal.

If this is the case then we would not be able to advise any further as it would put the forum in an awkward situation with Microsoft ( to put it mildly ).

Hi again,

Make sure that you have all Windows updates.

XP should be SP3.

Start > Run ....type in .....winver.....ENTER

This will tell you.

Sony has the option of auto updates.

Start > All Programs > VAIO Update > click VAIO Update Options.

In the VAIO Update Options window, check the "Automatically check for updates"

Click OK.

Hi afc4life

I'm not sure if this will work for you but it's worth trying:

Try one or both of these and see if your connection comes back.

Click Start...Run... Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns then click the 'enter' key. You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

remember that there is a space between the g and the /

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :

Click on Start... Control Panel, select the 'Network and Internet Connections' category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually 'local area connection' for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the 'Internet Protocol' (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says 'Obtain DNS servers automatically'.

Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

If that doesn't get it, try this one:

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd

A dos Window will appear.

Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset

Click on the 'enter' key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

Also:

probably a silly question, but is the internet turned on?

Some laptops have a separate button to actually turn on the internet connection.

I always forget this when working on my daughters laptop.

It would help if you could list what is listed against Network Adapters

and

Which ones have yellow exclamation marks?

=================

Not sure if this works for XP - but to confirm which model Vaio you have try this...

Start > Right Click on My Computer > Properties

In Vista it lists the computer model here.

If it is the same in XP let us know what it says.

====================

It looks as if we need to locate the ethernet / wireless drivers for your system.

====================

Try going back to Device Manager > Right click on Ethernet Controller > uninstall. ( if this has a yellow exclamation mark against it )

Shut down normally.

Re-boot.

Windows will find new hardware and should attempt to re-install the drivers.

Did you try this?

======================

I assume you have tried an ethernet cable direct to the router?

======================

If the above fails try switching on and constantly tap F8 about once per second.

From the startup options select "Safe Mode with Networking"

See if this allows you internet access.

Hi,

From your first post vgn-bx195vp is the model number.

(Thanks to a bit of research by Starbuck :) )

The drivers for your machine are here:

http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?m=VGN-BX195VP&l=en_GB

Scroll down to Intel Wireless LAN Driver

Save this to a memory stick.

Put the memory stick in the problem pc - locate the download and click on INDWLL-01035420-UN.exe to install the drivers.

You may need to re-boot.

Try the connection now.
