Guest David Parkes Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 We are running Windows Server 2003 on an HP Proliant ML350 G4. We are using a Quantum DLT8000 tape backup device. The problem we are having is that the backup never completes successfully. We are trying to back up around 52GB of data split across three hard disks. The Hardware Compression is switched on on the tape drive and our backup command has the /hc:on switch. The tape is a 40/80 GB tape. Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003. I have also added the /UP switch to the backup command. The following entry is dropped in the Application Log: Event Type: Error Event Source: NTBackup Event Category: None Event ID: 8001 Date: 04/07/2008 Time: 12:47:05 User: N/A Computer: VNI3 Description: End Backup of 'E:' 'Warnings or errors were encountered.' Verify: On Mode: Append Type: Normal Consult the backup report for more details. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. followed by: Event Type: Error Event Source: NTBackup Event Category: None Event ID: 8019 Date: 04/07/2008 Time: 12:47:10 User: N/A Computer: VNI3 Description: End Operation: Warnings or errors were encountered. Consult the backup report for more details. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. We are using tapes which have been marked as free. The backup log is trucated mid entry and there are no entries in the log file staing what has happened. Any ideas?

Guest David Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Re: Windows Server 2003 Backup. Sounds like you've probably ran out of space on the tapes. Although they are 40gb uncompressed tapes you will probably only get about 50gb or so on them depending on the type of files your backing up. Try removing something out of the backup which is a gig or so in size and re-run it. Unfortunately ntbackup isn't great for reporting specific erros. Have it use the entire tape. The *BEST* you can expect on a 40/80 GB tape is about 60GB. You're never going to get much better than 1.5 to 1 compression. It looks like you are running out of space. You need to exclude something. There has to be several GB that really aren;t necessary if you have to restore.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services
