Guest Jason James Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Ithought I'd let you and the group know what ended up happening re getting a (2007 model) new CX5500 Epson printer/copier/scanner to get the printer to work on an win98se operating sys. Initially, I thought I had done the install properly,..and it's not difficult, the Epson CD is for install-dummies,...still the printer didnt work, the PC just chucked up an error message saying "cant see device" on USBPRNT1 (or close to that). Franc's USB program indicated the PC was aware an Epson had been installed, connected to USB 1. I tried different cables, checked all the files on C:, and there were about 10 of them. There were Epson Icons on the desk-top for its 3 functions, but nogo. In sheer frustration I decided to uninstall and try a new install. Warning here, the program "add/remove" icon in "settings" gives the impression everything is gone,..not true. Did a file search for "Epson", and there were about 8 things left. Manually deleted these, and tried a new install. It worked! The only thing I can remember that I might have stuffed up, is after the install said "connect USB cable then turn printer turned on", I think I turned the printer off again after that step and I also had the cable in USB 2 (on the left handside of USB 1) Anyway thanx for the help people! Without this group I would have swimming around in the muck still :-) Jason

This would have been your Epson printer. Epson's VID is 04B8. If you're having trouble identifying a particular entry, then this resource may help: http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids Otherwise here are the VIDs that I've extracted from UVCView and usbview: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/uvcview_vid_nam.txt http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/usbview_vid_nam.txt - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email.

At the moment I'm a bit wary of touching anything,.but if I understand what you are saying, there maybe double entries in the Registry? When I was manually deleting files left over from the 1st install, I used the date of that 1st install as a guide, along with "Epson" mentioned in eacxh file's "properties". Jason

Sorry for the late reply, went hiking, camping and climbing at Red River Gorge.. Yeah, cleanup can be one of the most important aspects when attempting to deal with puzzling installation failures, or even from previously working devices that suddenly fail..Re-installing the driver may leave old entries in the registry which can conflict, at times, with the "new" installation. The USB1 verses 2 wouldn't have been an issue [unless you then moved it to a different port WITHOUT it being properly setup and then re-installed], but turning off the printer when it was being installed/detected software-wise would have. Thanks for posting back with the resolution/results. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com -- _________
