My DVD writer drive does not recognise and cd or dvd won`t play

Hi There,

 

I have HP Pavillion Pc Tower and over the past couple of days my dvd+- writer/cd-writer tray when i place cd or dvd does not recognise it and will not play it, I have windows xp, so cannot bur cds or nothing, any advice would be most grateful

Do you have any yellow question marks in Device Manager alpha with regard to this optical drive?

You may need an updated driver.

i checked and there is nothing yellow there, very strange, hoping you can help ?

If you have not changed anything since the last time it worked, I would say the drive is dead. Since the price of drives fell through the floor, the quality went the same way. They seem to last a year or so, then die.

I was thinking that, but hoped that this was`nt the case, think my only chance now is to contact HP themselves what do you recomend ?

Why would you need to contact HP Alpha?

If the PC is still under guarantee then contact the retailer that sold it to you.

If it isn't then just get and fit a new DVD drive from somewhere like Currys or another electrical outlet.
