Hi all. I accidentally check the compress old files in windows native Disk

Cleanup software. Now I have a 20% reduction in my system's performance. Is

there anyway to uncompress my system32 files & gain back my system's

performance without having to format my entire hard drive? Because that is

what the IT guy at my job recommended. Some of the system files in use will

not accept any uncompression commands from the "Run" window prompt. spent a

week trying to undo this. GUYS I NEED HELP!!!!!!!

I manually compress files by right clicking on the containing folder in

Windows Explorer and selecting Properties, Advanced. and check the box

before "Compress contents to save Disk space" , then clicking on Apply

and OK. It is really only worth the effort with Archives, Windows Update

Uninstall folders and System Restore points if you hold a lot. Files /

folders need to be large, rarely accessed and capable of significant

compression.

You do the reverse to decompress. i.e. uncheck the box before "Compress

contents to save Disk space" , click on Apply and OK. Do folders one

at a time as if you decompressed your Windows folder it would take a

long time and leave you wondering whether it was working. Please note

that compressed files are displayed in Windows Explorer in a blue font

and uncompressed file in a grey / black font.

You only need to decompress files regularly accessed.

Hope this helps.

First of all, it's hard to imagine you would suffer a "20% reduction in my

system's performance" because the "Compress old files" feature in Disk

Cleanup has been invoked. Surely there's something more involved here that's

slowing down your system.

It is true, however, that for the vast majority of users it's unnecessary to

use the "Scanning: Compress old files" routine when invoking the Disk

Cleanup process. It really slows down that process.

A user can get around this by simply accessing the registry (Start > Run >

regedit), navigating to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress

old files

and deleting that registry key.

Re: Need help Uncompressing "Disk Cleanup" damage

Hi all (^_^) Thanks for the assistance. Now I have managed to uncompress the

majority of my files using the

compact u/ i/ a/ s:\

command but not the system 32 files in use. I get denied access to them even

in safe mode & I can't get the recovery console to work either so I want to

try something else. Anna, which entries should I delete from the registry key

& will doing so return my systems performance back to normal? the entries

listed there are 3 as the following:

(Default) {in AB red letters}

Priority {in 0011 blue letters}

State Flags {in 0011 blue letters}
