hi ,i have an acer 6930g laptop which is 3 years old. recently the laptop has been overheating intermittently and i have realised that the fan is only working some off the time. i use speedfan to monitor the temps and have found a programme called read and write utility v1.4.9 which allows me to manually control the fan speed. i know by the monitoring that the fan is supposed to be on but only makes a high pitched whining noise as if the power is there but the motor isnt spinning, yet the next time it will be working perfectly. same for the manuall control, sometimes i can turn it on full speed but the next time it will just start whining. Any ideas?

when it is whining i can even blow hard through the vents and sometimes the fan will kick on.

Maybe it's time to remove the Fan/Heatsink and give it a good clean and then re-apply a fresh "thin" layer of thermal paste before putting everything back in place ;-)
