Guest SANTANDER Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Just need install win XP on new notebook with Vista(no files installed yet - no backup): to remove Vista completely. How to make it better way to ensure a smooth set-up: run from DOS command 'format c:' from DOS to erase the hard drive, then install XP, or directly boot from win XP installation CD and this will overwrite an existing partition and Vista? Thanks.
Guest Kelly Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Re: Formatting and installing Insert your XP CD and it will offer you a format option. There is no DOS command. 2. There's a command interpreter, but it won't allow itself to commit suicide (you can't format the system that's running the format). 3. To install XP, boot from the CD and follow the on-screen commands. Be aware that your "new" notebook may not be able to run XP. It may have been engineered to run Vista and above; there may not be drivers to connect the hardware to the XP system.
Guest DL Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Re: Formatting and installing Presumably you checked first at your laptop site as to whether winxp drivers are available? Installing winxp may invalidate both your warranty & support, unless winxp is a supported o/s by your supplier "SANTANDER" <santander@microsoft.news> wrote in message news:eNRxYjF4IHA.4988@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > > "Kelly" <kelly@kelly.com> wrote in message > news:uUfY9xE4IHA.220@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> Insert your XP CD and it will offer you a format option. Does it make sense first run data removal tool (WipeDrive) that permanently erases all data?
Guest Lil' Dave Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Re: Formatting and installing All version of windows installations overwrite the master boot record. Guest Kelly Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Re: Formatting and installing Sure, make sure your bios has the CD to boot first. Insert the XP-CD and reboot. On the first screen select enter then: F8, Esc, (Delete Partition) D, Enter, L. Once done the format screen will ask you to pick the file system - NTFS and the rest is easy to follow. Tip: On another system download your network drivers and video onto a pen drive. Once installed on your system, go to the manufactures page to get the rest of the drivers.
