Guest Paul Martin Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Which configuration of the power saving energy of the PC to preserve as much as possible the hard disc Hello, I usually activate the power saving energy on my PC what has for result to stop the hard disk rotation of the trays of my discs when they are not used during 5 minutes, but when they are seeking again, the trays restart, what takes some seconds so that they can find their rotation speeds and it takes some seconds to do so and it occurs finally quite often. I wonder if these frequent stops and restarts rotations of the trays of the hard discs do not engender finally more wears of the hard discs than when these trays turn constantly when the management of energy saving of the hard discs is deactivated. What do you think of it ? Is someone have informations on this subject ? Does a hard disc wear more when its trays stop and restart quite frequently instead of staying in rotation constantly ? Thank you in advance for your help.

I will not argue for or against either side but the question I always ask is: The last time an electrical component failed on you, when did it happen? Was it while the device was running along just fine, or was it the moment you turned it on? (Incandescent light bulbs come to mind.) If there are 2 religious camps on this issue, it meen that most of the people don't realy know the solution... It's sad, it is a relatively important question. Is there any scientific test on that ?

The devices are given life tests such as power on, power off, subjected to heat, atmospheric pressure, To determine life expectancy. Shipping high failure rate items costs the companies money. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?
