Hi PC Help,

I turned my PC on and had an update appear for Windows Secrity Essentials, and of course started to install it, then by chance my PC froze, after a restart all I get is a white curser and a Black screen,

I am running in safe mode at the moment, have tried every restore point but no files are updated. Not sure what to do now.

Help would be very much appreciated

Have you activated Windows using an illegal activator?

If not

Then you will need see which Windows updates/update caused the issues by uninstalling the latest one you think caused it by clicking on the links below will guide you through;

Cheers for the reply Makcalable,

I have activated windows 7 and I have a fully legal version as far as I am concerned, and was installed when my PC was built, I also have the genuin windows 7 disk.

Now I have tried both options from the links you posted, but they will not work due to me being in safe mode, all Windows Updates worked fine and never had a problem before this one.

Ok first off.... If at all possible I suggest you download Malwarebytes from another computer... and restart you PC back in to "SafeMode with networking" and update Malwarebytes and then run a full scan.

If that is not possible Boot from your Windows 7 Install DVD and perform a system repair.

Also do you get the option in safemode to restore back to the last known good configuration? if so try that.

Hi

Right I accessed Last known config by pressing F8 but it just stay's on the welcome window and cannot get any further, I have a feeling it is down to Windows Security Essentials Free anti virus protection programme, which was being updated at the time my PC froze, have searched for the programme to uninstall it but can't find it :(

I cannot get Malwarebytes yet as I have no access to another computer, but scans from the same programme last week came up clean, Will run a new scan tomorrow when I can get a copy from another PC.

Ok... couple of choices, you can uninstall MSE or access safemode "command Prompt" and type chkdsk c:/r C will be your drive letter.

Personally I would go with the first option and start again. http://decoupledmusings.blogspot.com/2009/10/microsoft-security-essentials-freezing.html

Out of interest... do you just have the one AV program installed?

And do you have SP1 installed?

I do run another AV (Avast) have found MSE but it cannot be uninstalled running in safe mode (ha ha typical) Getting an error code 0x8004FF11 also comming up as a download today is Microsoft Service Client but cannot uninstall that either as it says 'installer service cannot be found'.

And yes mate I am running SP1.

So is it down to a chkdsk c:/r you seem to mention that as a last resort am I right, what does it do, as I am not that good with these things :)

Anyway thanks for your help so far its much appreciated

Well no wonder you are having problems! You should never have any more than one AV program installed at any one time.

I suggest you remove them both completely by using the link provided will show you how to remove MSE and remove Avast this way to. http://decoupledmusings.blogspot.com/2009/10/microsoft-security-essentials-freezing.html

Once complete download Ccleaner and start a cleaning process then re install MSE ONLY.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were also infected with a virus because 2 AV programs can and will conflict with each other and leaves you vulnerable to infection as if you didn't have any installed.

Ok, but not everybody knows about not running two AV's and I am no expert that is for sure :), but the last update for the same MSE worked fine, I have run MSCONFIG and managed to get the first part sorted and am back on Windows 7 normal, but cannot find the startup item mentioned in on the web page, but their is the Microsoft Service Client mentioned in the startup list, sould I uncheck that as well.

"Microsoft Service Client mentioned" Yes this one ;-)

Make sure both Avast & MSE are Uninstalled before re installing MSE or Avast

Hi.

A good thread.

I'm wondering if a system restore might help to get you back to before you had a problem since you can get into safemode.

The advice given by Makkcalable is sound.
