XP failed startup

When i type the password in my HP Laptop, the screensaver flashes for

..01seconds then the computer starts the normal shutdown procedure. I ran

chkdsk from the recovery disk. no problems. i took the HD out and tried to

read it as an external HD on my desktop in an enclosure - Doesn't show up as

a drive. Looking for ideas??
