domain change - copy user profiles

Recommended Posts

If I remove an XP client from one active directory domain and then join the

same client to another one, is there a way to copy the profile so that the

programs and icons will stay the same? I know how to copy profiles in the

XP client, I'm just wondering if it works when you remove from a domain and

then join a completely different one.

Thanks,

TJ

Hi TJ,

It works well enough on the file level. Watch the permissions if the SIDs

for the account are different. They will be unless you used a migration tool

and took the current users SID into the SID History on the destination.

You're likely to run into a few problems with permissions in the Registry if

you copy over the Current User Hive (NTUser.dat). Those can be moderately

easily fixed, or you can start with a blank one and rebuild the settings.
