*All* keys begin with HKEY (H is for Hive, I presume):

 

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (often abbreviated HKLM)

HKEY_USERS

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (*)

HKU = HKEY_USERS (*)

HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER

HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

 

(*) These are the only real registry hives. All the rest are composites

on these registry hives. That is, all but those first two are

pseudo-hives.

HKEY_Current_User pertains to the profile you are using.

HKEY_Local_Machine pertains to the whole system, specifically Admin.
