TrickyNicky Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Hi I have a desk top and a laptop both running Windows 7. Is there an easy way to synchronise the files so both have the same files - i.e. one would then be a copy/backup of the other? Thanks Quote
Jelly Bean Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Hello again...............Mmmmmmmm..... If you mean files such as music and photos there are a few ways of doing things. Simply copy the files one from the other so both have a set of files. Files can simply be shared via windows media player...But they must be both connected to a network..... You could use an online backup. An external hard drive is a very good idea.Plug in the external drive to one machine and then use windows media player.... I find the safest way is to have the files stored on both machines and or an external hard drive.... Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
TrickyNicky Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Thanks again Jelly Bean for replying to my query. As a computer novice, can you expain what windows media player is, how I find it, use it etc. I'm more interested in synchronising word documents/files and a few Excel documents, plus photos. We don't do much music. Photos are really important and I'd hate to lose them if computer crashed. Norton keeps offering us to use their on-line backup for free but I don't want to be tied to Norton forever. A friend suggested Dropbox. Any knowledge of this system? I do have an external hard drive but have never managed to use it to back up both laptop and desk top. Many thanks Quote
Jelly Bean Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Hey again..... Windows Media Player is what you use to play music, its a peice of software already on your computer....Click start/all programs and it is in the list....You can also show your pictures using it....As your not savy with computers I would say either save a copy of all files on both machines or an external hard drive... TrickyNicky Posted August 12, 2011 Author Posted August 12, 2011 I'll stick with the external hard drive as you suggest. Will have to copy important files to match on both computers first though. Many thanks again Jelly Bean. Quote
Jelly Bean Posted August 12, 2011 Posted August 12, 2011 Your welcome... I personaly prefer an external hard drive of wich I have two....One can just fit in my back pocket.... USB pen drives are good to transfer files also... I would rather be safe than sorry, several backups of some kind is a great idea..... Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
