Guest Johnnybig Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I deleted data surpassing the recycle bin. After trying different programs my excel files which I am restoring are either not able to be opened at all or open with some weird symbols in them even though according to the programs they are in excellent condition to be recovered. 1. Do you know why they appear with these weird symbol and how can I fix that if it is a matter of setting 2. Can you recommend a freeware which finally works or an inexpensive recovery program OS: Windows XP Tablet edition 2005

Guest R. McCarty Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Re: Recovery of accidentially deleted data not readable Totally incorrect advice, unrelated to the issue. 1.) Deleted 'Data" files, not system - so SFC is pointless time waster. 2.) Repairing Excel would do nothing to resolve data file(s) issue. As to recovery, based on what you've stated you may have lost any chance for recovery since the recovered files are unreadable. The original data is irretrievably lost. This would be a good time to review your backup policy.

That has some pretty variable meanings. It can mean that the start end and end and the size of the file are recoverable, but the rest of the contents aren't necessarily. The prospects of recovery are evaluated from the size and start and end locations of the original file as descibed in the file allocation tables. But that says little about the quality of the contents. The recovery programs can't know in advance what the original *contents* actually are - if it did, you wouldn't need to recover the files. > 1. Do you know why they appear with these weird symbol and how can I fix > that if it is a matter of setting It isn't fixable or a matter of settings. The files aren't recoverable in their original form. When files have been deleted, they aren't necessarily removed, but their location is marked as over-writable. The more use the system sees, the probability of overwriting increases. And that is what has happened to your files. Because of this effect, it's important to immediately STOP using the system and move the drive to another system and recover without running the OS on the drive, if you actually want to recover files. > 2. Can you recommend a freeware which finally works or an inexpensive > recovery program > OS: Windows XP Tablet edition 2005 Unfortunately in your case there aren't any, possibly at any price. The files have been overwritten, and installing software will only decrease your chances of recovery. You have to remove the drive and host it elsewhere. What you need to do, but I suspect can't, is to restore from backups. Sorry there isn't better news. HTH -pk

Additionally it has ability to preview deleted files created by Microsoft Excel.
