I have recently got an acer netbook running windows 7. After using it yesterday it took ages to shut down and the screen said "confguring widows, do not turn off power. This took 5 mins to shut down & I was panicing I'd broken it. What was it doing & is it ok?

Absolutely. And when it says don't turn off the power take that very seriously. Doing so when it is configuring the updates can cause major issues.

 

Since it is recently bought it probably has Windows 7 SP1. If SP1 does need to be installed via Windows Updates be prepared for a quite lengthy configuration. Whatever you do let it finish.

Just for further confirmation, when Microsoft send out updates that may be quite large this is a common event, you may also see the Windows configuration completing when you re start the computer.

All this is quite normal and nothing to worry about, just remember not to turn off the power, it normally shuts down itself at the end of configuration anyway.

Then it is safe to turn off power if a desktop, if laptop, then nothing further needs to be done till you turn on again.
