The latest security update KB951748 blocks access to my ISP for e-mail

and Internet connection. OK without it - install it, nothing connects

- take it off, works fine etc. Any ideas (apart from don't install

it)?

Uninstall Zone Alarm and either use Windows firewall or download

something like Comodo that doesn't conflict with the update like Zone

Alarm does.

This is happening to Zone Alarm users. I would imagine Zone Labs will

issue a software update for Zone Alarm to take into account the new

update. I would not recommend removing the Microsoft update. Use the

Windows Firewall for a bit and disable zone alarm until it gets an

update.

Here's one solution:

The workaround is a simple one in this case: After changing ZoneAlarm

Pro's default Internet Zone security setting from High to Medium, we

were able to re-establish connectivity through Web browsers. However,

PING in the command line still would not function, timing out on every

legitimate instruction.

Hmm, that's odd. When the problem first manifest on my system this morning

"ping" was the one thing that still worked fine. That's how I determined I

wasn't just having a NIC or router problem. My web browser and e-mail client

still were able to connect to servers, too; they just timed out before

anything could be downloaded.

I don't have Zone Alarm but I am curious if it affects people with SP2

or both SP2 and SP3. What is your setup if I may ask?

This work around reduces your security.

See

http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=cfg&message.id=52727

Someone has posted a message to the ZA forum about a fix.

The only issue is that some people not using ZA are also reporting the

problem, probably a similar issue.

Re: Security update blocks internet access

It's a HP Zd7000A laptop, XP MCE with SP3. Zone Alarm Free and AVG Free for

software security, and everything behind a wireless router/firewall. FireFox

3 and ThunderBird 2 for web/mail clients.

FF, TB and AVG were able to see their respective servers, but would hang and

eventually time out before actual data transfer. As I said, ping to various

addresses worked perfectly.

I haven't had the chance yet to implement the workarounds, that will have to

wait until this evening when I get home. It's golf after work so it might

even be tomorrow before I have time to try it.

Must be an across-the-board hindrance to some firewall apps then. I

would guess that Zone Labs will release an update or patch any day

now. I am kind of glad that Microsoft and everyone else, for that

matter, issued this DNS fix and reveled that programs that rely on the

unpatched DNS methodology need to play catch-up and quick. Cheers.

Keep an eye on this thread:

Although the fix here should work:

I strongly disagree with this advice:

Perhaps a better firewall is what's needed?

I've just installed the new relevant ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000,

and the outstanding MIcrosoft updates.

Everything seems to be working ok so far. Thanks to ZoneAlarm for

their swift action.

How can you thank Checkpoint for their swift action since they have known

about this problem for four months?
