Re: Zone Alarm's workaround for loss of Internet connectivity after applying the DNS Update from KB951748

Help!!! I did a system restore this afternoon back to Monday Jul 7, and my

computer 'fixed' the Microsoft critical update/zone alarm problem that

happened Tues/Wed..

Computer is running great. An hr. later in my task bar I see the icon

asking me to install the updates, so my computer again downloaded the

critical updates from Microsoft.

I am assuming that the update they want me to do is the bad one and I

don't want to have the problem again so no way am I going to download it

again.

How do I get rid of the icon in my taskbar that wants me to do the

update? I am assuming that Microsoft has not yet solved their problem.

Thanks for any help,

Cindy in AR

It's not the update that's bad, and it's not Microsoft's problem. The

problem is a ZA incompatibility. If it were me, I would install the

update, uninstall ZA, and use the Windows firewall instead.

Change the Automatic Updates operation from daily at ___ to the

3rd option "Notify Me, but don't....." The update you are trying to

avoid is KB951748.

Automatic Updates applet in Control Panel ( Classic View )

Why don't you delete ZoneAlarm?

there is info at betanews

about the update by microsoft

to the dns.

frankly i have never been

a fan of zaterous and comode

freewares for a variety

of reasons and have no

issue of telling people

not to bother with them.

in any case your msg

sounds that at least they did

not hijack your system.

Re: Zone Alarm's workaround for loss of Internet connectivity after applying the DNS Update from KB951748

Thank you to all who answered. I went ahead and uninstalled Zone Alarm.

Don't need the hassle......... I have the ON from the security center for

the firewall, automatic updates and virus protection. I am running XP.

I am thinking maybe in a month or so when Zone Alarm figures out how to

fix their problem I can reinstall it. On second thought do I really need

it with already having the Security Center enabled.

Thanks again, really appreciate your help

YW, Cindy, and thanks for your feedback.

Keep in mind that the Windows Firewall is inbound-only (which should be

sufficient protection for most home users, especially if you connect via a

router).

I too went through the restore to an earlier date image backup thinking I

had a virus or something until I figured out it was ZA blocking my internet

access.

I temporarily downgraded ZA from High to medium and now have internet access

again.

> I strongly disagree with this advice:

Which specific advice do you disagree with? It is not clear.

As I respect your opinion, which other firewall do you suggest? I've been

considering switching to Comodo anyway and this might just do it for me even

though I hate learning a new firewall's quirks all over again.

I normally have Download but do not Install, and have been using this

temporarily to avoid installing the update after problems all of

yesterday.

Overnight, the update decided to install ITSELF and reset my settings

Thanks. Perhaps post a notice to the group in this format as a new

topic so others see it?

You'll eventually find Zone Alarm is useless and that your computer will run

cleaner and faster.

I've just installed the new relevant ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000,

and the outstanding MIcrosoft updates.

Everything seems to be working ok so far. Thanks to ZoneAlarm for

their swift action.

(Meaning that MIcrosoft no longer has a problem to solve,

ZoneAlarm has solved theirs, and that AFAIK the latest updates

of both products can be used together.)

It really does not seem to be anyone's problem but more of a timing

issue and ZA just got the short end of the stick. At least that's

giving ZA the benefit of the doubt that they were just slow in

responding and not left out of the loop. Seems this was a planned

update for a while. Read the lower portion of the link.

I guess Zone Alarm was not at the DNS fix meetings that many of the

major tech players were at when this was being fixed. ^_^

reinstalling Zone alarm

reinstalling Zone alarm

Since I took Zone alarm off because of the problem they were having and it

is now fixed and back in working order, would you suggest I reinstall Zone

Alarm.

I am running XP and I am using Microsoft Windows Security Center. The

Firewall, automatic updates and virus protection are all ON. Would it be a

good thing to be using both?

Thank you,

Re: Zone Alarm's workaround for loss of Internet connectivity after applying the DNS Update from KB951748

Thank you Thee Chicago, you answered the question I just posted. You are

saying you only need 1 firewall and using Microsoft's is plenty to have.

Strange though I have used Zone Alarm and Microsoft's firewall for years and

there never seemed to be any kind of a conflict.

I am not as computer savvy as some of you, maybe I just lucked out never

having any problems with running both of the programs.

Re: reinstalling Zone alarm

There is no logical reason to reinstall Zone Alarm.

Do not use two software firewalls. You incur needless extra overhead

and you run the risk of conflicts between them.

You can either leave the Windows firewall in place or reinstall ZA.

They both do pretty much the same thing. Personally I would just keep

the Windows firewall and forget about ZA; although I used to use ZA, I

no longer do.
