TS 2008 User & Device CAL's

Is it possible to mix the userage of User CAL's and Device CAL's on a single

2008 Terminal Server, and if so, how do you set the TS Licensing mode on the

Server?

Based on the information here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/licensing-terminal.aspx

Particularly "You may choose to use a combination of TS Device CALs and TS

User CALs simultaneously with the server software.", I beleived it was

possible, but now that I'm actually looking to install the licenses, I'm

scratching my head somewhat.

Please Help.

Re: TS 2008 User & Device CAL's

Hi Peter,

for Windows Server 2003 Microsoft said that you have to put your server in

"per user" mode if you mix device and user cals.

I haven't found a similar 'official' explantation for Windows Server 2008

but it is technically the same - you can not mix cals in device mode so you

have to use user-mode.

Sorry for my English

Oliver

As an addition: it is legally possible, but it will be difficult to

know how many licenses you need of each type to comply with the

EULA.

Thanks Oliver, I'll give that a go and see what happens.

Re: TS 2008 User & Device CAL's

Hi Vera,

Could you elaborate on this for me please? We are only running a small

server with 10-15 user CALs and 1 device CAL. Is the problem you mention more

applicable to larger installations dealing with larger numbers of mixed CAL's?

Re: TS 2008 User & Device CAL's

Well, yes, it becomes more complicated with more users, clients and

licenses.

Since you have only a single device cal, I assume that you have one

dedicated client which is available to everyone, and all regular

users have their own user cal. That's perfectly manageable.

But mostly when this question is asked, people have bought first 50

device and then 50 user licenses. That makes a mess.

Re: TS 2008 User & Device CAL's

Yes, That makes sense.

Thanks for the Clarification.
