Shortcut files show locked for editing

Recommended Posts

I have one user that is attempting to open a file from one of the millions of

icons they have on their desktop. The file (excel in this case) shows "locked

for editing" with options to notify etc. When she opens excel and looks up

the file it opens just fine. This also happend in links from outlook e-mails

that are sent to her.

Any suggestions?

Rod,

There is a knowledge base article that may shed some light on the

problem--have a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814112

I'm on SBS 2003 and the files open fine from any other method except from

desktop shortcuts and outlook. I don't think this is my issue.

I'm sorry I don't understand. I'm having issues with excel files (and others)

and that fix is not even on this list?

Re: Shortcut files show locked for editing

Try the usual fixes for this.

Tools>Options>General Uncheck "Ignore Other Applications"

If no joy with that................

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.

2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.

In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe" /regserver(quotes required)>OK.

Re: Shortcut files show locked for editing

Rod,

Have you looked through the articles in the MS Knowledge Base

http://support.microsoft.com/search/ that contain the phrase: about locked

files? In particular, this one might help:
