XP SP3 - confused

Recommended Posts

I'm not clear whether I need SP3 or not. They are going to add it to

Auto Updates today. I have XP SP2 and have been loading the updates.

I thought SP3 was just a lot of patches, which had already been

available through Windows Update. Hence I wouldn't need it.

I've been reading today that if you DON'T want SP3, you should load a

kit - but won't Autoupdates load SP3, and shouldn't I just load it?

You don't "need" it right now, no. But in less than 2 years, WinXP SP2 will

no longer be supported and you'll have to have SP3 installed to be offered

any more updates.

It's up to you. If you configure Automatic Updates to "Notify Only", you

can opt not to download or install SP3 (but you won't be able to "hide" it).

Re: XP SP3 - confused

IF all of the Security updates that were issued since SP2 are already

installed then there's is no urgency to apply SP3.

However, SP2 will no longer be in extended supported [*no security

patches for it*] after July 13, 2010.

Extended support for SP3 will last until April 8, 2014 [security patches

for it]. http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean31

SP3 offers two additional features ... one is NAP, the other, I forget <w>

Sooner or later you'll need it as other programs are updated and then they

will require you to have SP3 already installed.

Re: XP SP3 - confused

Most people have not had problems but there are some that do.

I plan to hold off installing SP3 for a while.

Also if I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the

file and not use Automatic Updates. I would also create an

"Image Backup" of my drive prior to installing SP3 just in case

I do have problems.

It's true that if you are up to date with updates as they've come out,

you already have most of (but not all) what's there. But there's no

reason not to install it, and have *all* the latest updates. I think

everyone should. Be sure to first read

Woof! YOU need to become educated and join reality. SP3 = SP2 + its

hotfixes and a few other nearly negligible to most, changes.

Overview

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates

for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of

new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’

experience with the operating system.

Note: Customers running Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System

(RMS) are advised to install a hotfix for a Microsoft Dynamics RMS issue

prior to installing Windows XP SP3.

instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you.
