Can I buy cheap Brother printer cartridges at www.ink4less.com?

I have a Gateway computer with the following: 1) a 1400-MHz Pentium 4

processor, 2) 256 MB of RAM, and 3) 40 GB of hard-drive space.

The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (ME).

A month ago, I bought a Brother MFC-240C printer. This is a

multifunction device: printer, copier, fax, and scanner.

Recently, my "starter" yellow-ink cartridge ran out of ink, and one

other cartridge is about to do the same.

At the Best Buy store where I bought the printer, Brother cartridges

are sold for $13.50 each. I believe that these are the LC51B, LC51Y,

LC51C, and LC51M cartridges.

Well, I have discovered the website known as http://www.ink4less.com This

website seems to sell these cartridges for $4.21 each.

Here is the url:

http://ink4less.com/sitetools/product.php/cat/4209

So, is this some kind of trick or scam? Can I really buy genuine

Brother cartridges for only $4.21?

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

I'm thinking those non-Brother ink cartridges probably void the printer's

warranty. I'd certainly look it up in the Brother paperwork, first.

I buy my compatible cartridges from Neximaging and have been very

satisfied with them. They sell compatible cartridges for your printer

for $3.19 each. Here's a link:

Wait a second. I'm a little confused.

Are the cartridges mentioned on the ink4less website GENUINE Brother

cartridges?

Or are they cheap imitations? Are they NON-Brother?

The market is full of "just-as-good-as" ink and toner cartridges.

Magazine reviews rate most as gunk, a few just-as-good-as OEM.

Resistance to fading is just one criterion which may take time to

judge properly. Non-clogging is another. But my experience with

two brands of just-as-good-as laser toner cartridges for Brother

MFC printers indicates that there is no just-as-good-as, at least not

for Brother laser toner.. Unless you do a *lot* of printing and can

take the time and expense to experiment over a span of one or two

years, you might as well buy the OEM ink cartridges and not worry.

Re: Can I buy cheap Brother printer cartridges at www.ink4less.com?

In most countries there are antitrust regulations which do not allow a

manufacturer from voiding a warranty due to use of a 3rd party

consumable product. This is part of the tying legislation.

A manufacturer is made responsible to prove that the consumable was

inferior in some legitimate manner which would have caused the defect

being reported. Since, in most cases, the defect is not related to the

consumable, and the cost to prove it is too high anyway, the

manufacturer may growl and threaten, but they usually know better than

to enforce such a warranty restriction.

In more recent manuals for these printers you usually will notice the

notice is more about "for best quality use original **** brand ink

cartridges"

Take a good look at a few of their offerings, for a few different brands of

printer (HP, Epson, Canon, etc.) Notice how the packaging all looks the

same, and just below the picture it has the word "Compatible", and they all

have the same blurb:

"Our products have been specifically designed to produce consistent, sharp

output from your printer. This product has been manufactured under the ISO

9000 quality system and is warranted to be free from defects in materials

and workmanship for one year. All products are backed by our 4-Star

Guarantee."

Now go look at this page of brand-name cartridges from Amazon.com

http://tinyurl.com/57c7ro

How did you think Ink4Less cartridges could only cost pennies on the dollar?

Maybe they fell off the back of a truck, or something?

Re: Can I buy cheap Brother printer cartridges at www.ink4less.com?

When you say, "in most countries", did you mean to include the United

States? Can you suggest where I might find such language in the antitrust

legislation of the United States? Or in court records of appeals?

Your entire spiel is very general in terms. (I mean, I haven't read most

manuals for printers these days. Have you?) I'd prefer to read the actual

Warranty if it were me making the decision, and not depend on some vague

description of regulations. You also say, "Since, in most cases, the defect

is not related to the consumable..." It's the cases not included in that

statement that concern me.

OK, so come clean. You tried really hard to sound like a lawyer. Are you a

real one? I'm guessing, "Not." But nice try.

I've "known" Leythos for many, many years. Never struck me as anything but

honest and upstanding. Whereas I know nothing about you except what I've

read -- which doesn't much support your contentions. So far, your "advice"

My guess is that they are similar to Brother's cartridges, but not

genuine ones. I don't have a Brother printer, but in my Canon inkjet,

I use third-party cartridges (from LD Products) without a problem.

I see that Gary has suggested that using third-party cartridges may

void the warranty on your printer. Although I suppose that's possible,

personally I wouldn't worry about it. In a short time, the amount of

money you will have saved with third-party cartridges is likely to far

exceed the value of the warranty.

But it's your choice, of course. If you are concerned with the

warranty, by all means take Gary's suggestion and check first.

Only idiots would make a stupid blanket statement like that. This just goes

to show you that you don't know everything and because "you" don't know does

not make it wrong. Drop the questioning about my identity, I have nothing to

prove to you or anybody.

Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting

directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to

pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST

Block list, and who provides a tool for your use that will block access

to reputable anti-malware sites without telling you he's doing it?

And do you really want to trust someone that has had to change their

posting identity after being busted by MS as a fake MVP?

I can turn a good idea into a pile of Pablum like nobody's business (used
