Not only keeping your version of Firefox up to date to maintain your security, there are also two site safety add ons for Firefox that are worth having on board. They will warn you about a bad or dangerous site, and in some cases block it to prevent you getting lumbered with a malware download.

The first is McAfee site Advisor, and is available from the McAfee site here-

The second is direct from Motzilla and called WOT (Web of trust) and is available from the Mozilla site here-

In both cases these are the latest versions so if already on board, do check to update them.

Hum, well now now, lets get back on topic.

Firefox is now at version 3.6.12 However there is a rumour that a new version 4 is already out in BETA mode and will be fully released soon. Early reports I have seen suggest that the BETA is proving to be very fast.

me been me has firefox beta and ie 9 beta and chrome beta and apart from running ie 9 in compatibility mode for a few sites I gotta say its rather good

I think I had better add here that no matter how fast your browser is at loading a page, it sometimes has to wait in a queue, so some sites may seem slow to load anyway.

At varying times of day the whole network may be slow through system overload, also your own ISP may be throttling speed down at busy periods, it is well to remember that when comparing one browser to another.

It isn't always the fault of the browser, it is having to wait for information to come through from the website you are asking it to view.

Is there anyway of checking to see if my add-ons are compatable with ff 4, before actually installing it?

Unfortunately i can't see anything that would check this out before installing FireFox 4.

Once it's installed it will automatically check this for you .... but that doesn't really answer your question.

Because i use quite a few addons, this is the reason i never upgrade until i have to.

Most developers will be fairly quick to update their addons, but obviously some may not work straight away.

Edit:

After looking in to this, there is a manual way to check the addons you have installed before updating to FireFox 4.

Make a list of your addons.

Go to:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

 

In the search box enter the addon you want to check.

On the information page for that addon it will say which versions of FireFox it's compatible with.

Works with Firefox 3.0 - 4.0b12

If it says 4.0b12 or similar, there's a good chance it'll work with 4 RC.

I just tried the upgrade to Firefox 4.

Only about half of my addons worked and hardly any of the added themes worked.

First look at it ... OMG what have they done!

FF4 now removed and have gone back to 3.6.15.

 

After reverting back to the previous version, i noticed the 'Reload Current Page' button had been moved from the LH to the RH side of the address bar.

Had to right click and select 'customize', then click on Restore Default Set' to put it back.

What a pain!

I have gone through all the latest waffle from Mozilla and read many users comments on the FF daily scramble to update this wonderful program, but untill these enthusiatic update wreckers stop their current practice of chasing their own tails, I will stay with FF version 3.6.23 where every single addon and personal program works perfectly and life is good.

 

When Mozilla either withdraw their support for FF 3.6 or stop flying round in ever decreasing circles (and we all know where that leads to) and reach a 6 month period of stability, I will consider updating, but until that day arrives - "Have a nice day Mozilla".

 

My personal advice to these people is to forget what Google Chrome are doing and concentrate on improving this marvelous Forefox browser we all love so much. After all, Chrome is nothing more than a bodged up go-cart compared to the luxurious time-proven limousine of Firefox.

Sorry, I never noticed that this thread was ancient so my previous post is way ahead of it all.

 

Anyhow, to clarify todays situation. The latest FF version is 7 with version 8 due to be released any time now. Version 4 and 5 were a disaster by Mozilla`s own admission, with addons and other configurational problems and failures. Many users went bananas about these versions, in fact the web and many Forums have mountains of posts on Mozilla`s fetish for almost daily updates.

 

It is said by Mozilla and many users alike that version 7 is good and all the previous problems have now been corrected. It is said that there is no problem now udating to version 7.

 

I personally see no point in it when version 8 is about to be released. Just asking for trouble. So in my case I will stay with 3.6 and I would advise those who have version 7 to stay with that until all the bugs have been killed off in version 8 by Mozilla and world users. Then after a suitable period of stability and faultless operation, go for version 8.

 

I personally have no intention to be a laboratory Guinea Pig in some program proving exercise.
