Guest tommy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I posted this question previously but believe I found the cause of those annoying yellow popup information balloons. When an abject has an " alt = " tag on it, when the mouse moves over the object an annoying yellow window pops up displaying whatever text follows. I believe in the past most people programming just left this blank, but now more and more things have them. For instance, go to http://www.msn.com and on the top left the little envelope icon next to "Hotmail" pops up the word "Envelope", now move the mouse to the MSN Directory icon and "Figure of an arrow pointing to screen" - come on , is this really neccesary ???? How can Windows be configured to either ignore these stupid things completely or unless some other action is taken (Like holding down the "ctrl" or "alt" key) ??

Doesn't do anything for me, but I'm using FireFox 3. I take it you are using IE? PS. Its not Windows you want to configure, its your browser. Small point but if you're looking for Windows settings, save yourself the time and look through the IE options instead.
Guest tommy Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Re: stop Annoying Yellow Popups Thanks for responding. I realize IE has some settings, but this is definitely a "Windows" issue. For instance, open up "My Computer" and when you go to close it, let the mouse sit over the "X" in the corner, a yellow window pops up saying "close". In Outlook, when the mouse is over a message in the Inbox, a usually huge yellow box comes up blocking out everything in the area. It seems like a user should be able to disable or control this insane behavior since everyone in the known univers is filling in these stupid "tags"....... If those boxes really bother you, consider using Firefox 3 as your browser. Here's what you have to change in FF to hide the tooltips. Open Firefox and enter about:config in the address box. Hit the "I promise" button. In the filter box, enter tips. Only one entry should be left, browser.chrome.toolbar_tips. Right click on this entry and select Toggle from the menu. The entry in the value column should change from true to false. Go to http://www.msn.com and see if the tips still appear. And to answer an anticipated question, I don't know the comparable solution for IE. As for other instances where you see tooltips displayed, it would appear that they are controlled by various registry settings. For example, you mentioned the X button in an open window. Microsoft outlines the procedure to deal with those tooltips in this article. How to Disable ToolTips for Minimize, Maximize, and Close http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q186385 I don't see the box you're referring to in the Outlook Inbox so I have no idea how that's disabled. I've turned off the preview options in Outlook 2007 so that may have something to do with it. Good luck Nepatsfan
