Hi,

So I am running my defrag and this particular one can also check for errors

on my disk. When I run it, it tells me it has found an error and to run

CHKDSK /f

I do this and still no change. This error was found in C:

I have 2 HDD and in my second HDD one of the parittions has also encountered

this error.

Help!

Thanks in advance.

Re: chkdsk error

What error? Did you restart your computer to allow chkdsk to run?

Hope this helps.

Re: chkdsk error

So, what is "this particular" defrag called? Was there any name for the

error, or additional details?

Re: chkdsk error

Yes after I have rebooted I still get that there is an error on my disk. I

forgot to mention I am running XP SP3 here.

Re: chkdsk error

OK I used CHKDSK in MSDOS or Command Prompt and that also gave me the error

as well in addition to the defragger as well.

I still get this error, should I be concerned?

Re: chkdsk error

What is the exact wording of the error? Are you using a third party

defragmenter. What is your anti-virus programme?

Re: chkdsk error

Unless you're willing to answer our questions, we can't help you. You didn't

answer any of my previous questions. You tried to second-guess me, instead,

and that's not how this works. We ask diagnostic questions and you answer

the questions as precisely as you can, with all the detail you can muster.

One thing I'm willing to guess from what you've provided thus far: Your

defrag application probably doesn't do its own disk checking, it sounds more

like it just runs CHKDSK in the background.

Now, about those questions... Got any answers? 'Cause I've got more

questions: You mentioned elsewhere in the thread that you have SP3

installed. Did these errors only start occurring after installing SP3?

Re: chkdsk error

Defragger is O&O Pro version 10. I hadn't checked the CHKDSK with SP2 in my

collective memory.

I did this check since I noticed O&O offered that as a choice and this is

how I came to find out that I am getting thse errors.

Still should I be concerned?

Re: chkdsk error

Reason I hesitated to answer your question is because parts of what you

describe made no sense, so I had to read up. That's also why I wanted more

details.

When you run CHKDSK /f on a partition with open files (drive cannot be

locked), it should refuse to run and prompt you to have it to run after a

restart. This should ALWAYS occur on the system partition. However, there is

this blurb in Help:

"If you run chkdsk without the /f command-line option on an active

partition, it might report spurious errors because it cannot lock the

drive."

....which is what I think you're getting. What you describe doesn't really

match those words, but it's too close a coincidence to ignore. Perhaps,

somehow, CHKDSK is *always* putting up spurious error notices when what it

should be doing is prompting you to run CHKDSK on restart due to the

partition not being lockable. I won't speculate on *how* this might have

occurred (though that defrag program does come to mind), just that it sounds

like what like is happening to your system.

So, tentatively, I'd say the error notices you're getting are spurious. But

you still haven't given me the error notice(s) verbatim -- EXACTLY what do

they say? Is the error message EXACTLY the same whether prompted by O&O

Defrag or by CHKDSK?

When you do run CHKDSK /f on C:\, it *does* prompt you to let it run after a

restart, does it not? Also, since you mention other partitions, are you

multi-booting other OSes or are they all (except C:\) simple data storage

partitions? In particular, what's on that "other partition" that you mention

having the same problem.

Two things I'd try: Frist, I'd uninstall O&O and then try

CHKDSK C:

and see if it still reports errors.

After testing, reinstall O&O and then check for updates at the app's site.

Then run its defrag.
