I don't know if the following has happened previously, but I notice on my

desktop and notebook that when I turn them on, the desktop comes up and some

of the icons are showing as 'white' squares. After a few seconds, the 'white'

squares are then replaced by the actual program's icon.

Is this normal?

Is there any way I can have ALL of the actual program's icons show

immediately (no 'white' boxes) when the desktop loads? Rather than some

showing right away and some showing a few seconds later (to replace the

'white' boxes)?

Hope I have explained this properly. (I just had to install AOL 9.1 on both

machines and don't know if this icon 'problem' existed prior to that.)

Thanks for any help.

Re: Desktop icons

Hi Alice,

To proceed: Go to: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden

File and Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files.

Delete Icon Cache. It is located here:

IconCache.db

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data

To clear and reset icon cache:

Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance/Advanced. Use the item

drop box and choose Icon. Change the pixel number by one. Ok your way

out.

Re: Desktop icons

Thank you. For a while there I thought there was something going wrong with

the computers, especially since we just recently (more/less forced to)

install AOL 9.1. Thought that the installation of AOL 9.1 might have caused

the actual icons being slow to show (and the white squares appearing first

for the actual icons).

Re: Desktop icons

Thank you for your informative reply, but we are just novices at computers

and really could not follow what you have outlined, for fear of making

serious mistake.

Re: Desktop icons

FYI....

We did try the "Delete Icon Cache," which you said would restore itself. We

had to delete two. I believe one was in Owner and the other in (I think) All

Users. Restarted computer and icons (at least, for now) popped right up on

the screen, all at once. Didn't have to wait for 'white' boxes to be replaced

by actual program icons.
