First, please forgive the multipost after several days. I did not get a

response in NG: microsoft.public.win98.webtv.

Does anybody use the WebTV features of win98+? The MS TV/video adapter in

the Network components list; is this a by product of an install of this

webTV component in MSIEv.6? The Vista system is supposed to enhance the

video experience with more advanced drivers. Is this adapter necessary for

Internet streaming video in today's world? It seems to just hang on like a

dead alvin.

Are you running Win98 or Vista? (IIRC WebTV is not installed by default in

Win98.)

Do you have a TV tuner card installed?

Are you aware that WebTV in Win98 has nothing to do with http://www.webtv.com?

Not surprising. I have never, nor do I know anyone who has ever used WebTV.

I believe it first appeared as part of the original Windows 98, but common

sense dictates that it could have been a stand-alone developed on Win95 or

even an late-model 95 component. I dunno. It's not installed by default in a

normal Win98 setup.

Vista features you allude to are totally unrelated.

Uninstall it.

I am running win98se without a TV tuner card and I was not aware of the

relationship of webTV in win98+ or the existence of http://www.webtv.com.

I had a friend who had a webTV box, but we could not get it connected, This

was sometime ago in early 2k+1 or 2. At that time it was a neat idea with

minor disappointment above. I also implemented this on this machine in hope

of helping him. This adapter is still in the network components list. Is it

necessary for other functions such as streaming video? What is the status of

WebTV and where is it going today?

Re: webTV adapter

This was an interesting idea for the home user who did not require the

computing power of some of the pc's at the time and if they did, possibly

use a server based systems computing abilities.

Yes, Google has some good information about the history and current state of

webtv.

I think it is win98se and was bundled with the Wavetop technology that the

PBS media was broadcasting in the valleys of its broadcast range.

You say Vista is unrelated, but the big push of U-Verse out of SBC/ATT and

MSNTV which is essentially webTV development program in today's world.

U-Verse should be operational by August/Septemeber of 2008. Why the enhanced

video/TV drivers for Vista?

You think I should uninstall this adapter; will it be needed in the future

for some of these up coming media developments?

I guess I should since I can always reinstall. Is there any services for

webTV for win98se currently operating?

Re: webTV adapter

The application named WebTV is included in Win98 but it is not installed by

default.

Your friend's "webTV" box was the hardware associated with http://www.webtv.com

(which again has nothing to do with the application named WebTV included in

Win98).

A TV tuner card can have two functions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_tuner_card

The application named WebTV is not included in WinXP or higher. I have no

idea what's going on with http://www.webtv.com (other than the fact that it's been

available at some hotels where I've stayed and it didn't work worth squat).

Re: webTV adapter

Read PA's last reply to you.

One version of MSN TV (tv.msn.com, not msntv.com) provides TV via the

internet. It requires no television input. WebTV/MSNTV.com are not WebTV as

seen in Windows 98. Rather, they provide internet via the television, with

no PC involved, maybe not even any Windows involved. WebTV, as it occurs in

Windows 98 is more like U-Verse than anything else, but they are TOTALLY

unrelated. (If MS had anything to do with U-Verse, you can bet MS would make

sure that it gets prominent mention in ATT's U-Verse advertising.)

The video rendering improvements in Vista, whatever they consists of, are

intended to make ANY video signal, regardless of it's provenance, render

better (TV input, DVD or BlueRay video, including Hi Def, etc.), but AFAIK

it is strictly a hardware/signal processing thing and has NOTHING to do with

any of the other things you've injected into the conversation.

The device in your Windows 98 that you've been asking about is totally

worthless. The whole application is totally worthless. There is no way to

even use it any more. It's obsolete, totally dead. It even lost its own URL,

for crying out loud. Just try the link in this ResKit article,

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win98/reskit/part2/wrkc13.mspx

That site no longer has anything to do with Win98's WebTV.

Do you know how to bring these two into a crosspost? I finally got a

Also note, see the AT&T U-Verse system is starting up in this region this

Re: webTV adapter

Sorry, that was for instructional purposes. There is no way to "meld" the

two conversations. I simply added the Win98.Gen_Discussion thread to the

WebTV group, although it is as PA Bear said: The WebTV of Windows 98 has no

relation to http://www.webtv.com, even though Win98's WebTV once *did* own that

URL. WebTV for Win98 is dead and to my knowledge, every part of it is

useless.

That's outside of my sphere of competence, or interest, for that matter. I

just wanted to answer your puzzling question.

Re: webTV adapter

I had the users Guide up and running years ago and they were switching from

Gemstar to Zap2it or something. Anyway the user had to download every week

or so and when the ISP's began to offer the TV/Movie guide for all channels

in your area e.g. by zip code this idea went by the wayside. It really

needed to update itself on a weekly bases an now daily.

Wavephore/Wavetop for all the power thinkers there did not fly because the

consumers were not smart enough to rig it or did not want to buy the TV

tuner card. Computers were expensive back then, so many were lucky if they

had a 95B upgradeable or a 98/2k/mill and then xp etc. It is a struggle to

keep pace for some of us or to afford the ISP on top. Is there a use for the

TV Tuner card in today's world?

It is working, but only for Gary and me. He replied and add it to the NG

list. I do see that button there and should have tried that myself and will

on this one reply. I don't know if the other guy figure it out though on

webtv NG. :) <g>

I'm not much into it, as I said, but the certainly sell such cards, with all

kinds of connectors. People can edit their own videos and play them on the

30' giant-wall-sized "tv" monitor, or use the computer as a TIVO decide, or

whatever.

Re: webTV adapter

You're wrong, what I did did not meld the two threads. It just made this one

visible in both NGs.

Why don't we just leave this in the WebTV group. It's not like you're having

problems or anything, you just want to engage in a discussion of the

technology... But I don't see anyone in the Win98.General Discussion group

that shares your interest. Your technical question has been answered. Win98

WebTV is dead and obsolete and as far as I know can't be used for anything.

Replies to this post should only go to the WebTV group. (Unless I've

forgotten what "Followup-to" does.)

If you've been toying with all that, best check for a file named

"Logit.txt"... "START button, Find, F/F, Logit.txt". That is a monster

log created by the Browser Helper Object (BHO) called "Wavehelper Class"

which is created by Wavetop. If uninstalling Wavetop doesn't rid you of

the BHO, here are 3rd party apps that will...

http://www.definitivesolutions.com/ BHODemon

This one was free last I knew. It renames the BHO executable & can

"undo" that.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's BHOCop removes a BHO's Registry entries & can

"undo" that. "START button, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one?

http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/

HijackThis, I believe, can do it too. But be sure to read its

instructions & cautions carefully.

Re: webTV adapter

Hi, thanks for sharing that with us.

I found that BHO in HJT but had decided to leave it. I note the & "UNDO IT".

Are you implying that there are problems with using HJT to "Fix it" in the

event that the user might want to reinstall Wavetop? Is there any use for

this technology anymore? If I use HJT to fix this problem there is backup.

If I decided for some reason to reinstall Wavetop or any part of WebTV98

[because of its broadcast architecture]; will using HJT cause me to have to

reinstate that particular backup?

I found "Logit.txt" also.

What is the date of your Logit.txt? Is it continuing to fill

uncontrollably with error messages like mine was? If so, removing the

BHO will solve that. It has never caused me a problem to have done that

that I can detect or recollect. I'm not sure whether it was Explorer or

IE that was putting the error messages in there, but probably it was IE

(Wavetop is one of its Favorites). Open both to see whether Logit.txt

will grow.

Wavetop appears to do with that WEB TV the others are saying is

defunct...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232285/en-us

WaveTop 2.0 May Not Detect TV Tuner Card

Other than that, I really can't say whether you will ever need it or

whether reinstalling Wavetop will reinstall the BHO. Uninstalling

Wavetop, however, did not uninstall the BHO; so... ???.

If your Logit.txt is not filled with error messages or doesn't continue

to grow, I guess you can probably keep the BHO, though-- IF you are

squeamish about killing it.

Thanks, I just zapped them both. The only logs I saw were current date/time

and I guess there were some errors. I do not believe that removing a BHO

from a cabinet component will cause any problem in the future if I have any

need of it.

Did you ever get the WavePhore stuff working and what was the back channel?

Certainly an antenna can act as a reciever and a transmitter...I wonder

where this went when the Wi-Fi got going?

Very good. I haven't missed mine yet. And I haven't heard any of the

MVPs complain. Therefore, you've made the right decision, unless Terhune

has fallen into another earthquake & PA Bear entered another

I don't know a lot about it, I'm afraid. Here is another article that

ties WEB TV, Wavephore & Wavetop all together...

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1997/oct97/wavphopr.mspx

Microsoft to Include WavePhore's WaveTop Software in Windows 98

WaveTop Is the First Data Broadcast Service to Build On Top of Windows

98 Open Broadcast Architecture

I guess all the parts are defunct, if one part is. And, if you don't

have an antenna, looks like it never would work in the first place,

anyhow. I just hope none of the various components are useful for

anything else. But, if so, you know you can simply use HiJackThis's undo

to get back what you've removed, if that's the part you discover to be

useful.

Looks like I still, myself, have a few registry keys that still mention

Wavephore & Wavetop-- & even mention Logit.txt! Hmmmm!

Re: webTV adapter

Phore:Means bearer translated from Greek. Wavephore was the name of a

system/company that was to be implemented by PBS in the VBI [vertical

blanking interval] which is in the peaks and valleys of its broadcast band.

They had a few profs from Yale and Princeton that were going to thru webTV

and the WavePhore system offer basic free internet content of fairly high

quality without an ISP...go figure! The thrust of the1990's internet

development. All the service of an ISP less the ISP using just an TV antenna

and TV Tuner card. It was free see. Support was through advertising to the

users like Excite and many others. The original internet users being

computer scientists and engineers were not particularly interested in Ads

only communication and assurance.

Looks like Terhune still had a toe left for a poodle to tug him out!

Thanks for sparing me hours of study to answer his trick question!

That's an impressive technology, sounds like. Sounds like it would have

been a one-way communication, though, just like TV. Had it not already

done so, sounds like it might have become defunct anyhow with the

looming demise of analog TV. HDTV requires a different antenna &

possibly has eliminated or otherwise made use of the VBI. That could

explain the secret channels I now get on my Vizio VW37L. Thanks for that

synopsis. Some of the URLs some have posted are huge & tough to figure.
