Guest Edwest@Vrisis Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Am I the only one living this nightmare? Having read about the problems with a confilct with Zone Alarm I downloaded and Installed the Zone Alarm new update that works with SP3. I then downloaded and Installed SP3 and the whole system crashed, unable to start Windows at all, not even in Safe Mode! I have just had to do a complete reinstallation - well done Microsoft!

In the context of a problem with Zone Alarm, I'd be ragging on Zonelabs, not Microsoft. Of course, I gave up on ZA back in 2001, when I discovered what I considered to be a shortcoming in their application. I installed SP3 on two Windows MCE 2005 computers without issue. Also immediately after a system upgrade from Windows Me to Windows XP Home Edition. All three XP systems were at SP2 when I applied SP3. None have barfed; all are working as expected. None were running ZA, either. Third parties are responsible for ensuring that their product will actually work with the OS on which it will run. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

My old ZoneAlarm worked fine with SP3 Your the ZA problem was with update KB951748, not SP3 Galen

Seems to me that if Zone Alarm is causing problems, I would get rid of it.

You're not the only one, but you ARE in a very tiny minority. What happened when you restored from your backup? Er, you did back up your system before installing SP3, didn't you? If not, to be consistent you should immediately cancel all your insurance policies, get rid of any spare tire(s) you have, and get rid of any anti-virus and anti-malware you have. I've installed SP3 on 26 machines, and they're all working just fine. Did I read and follow the MS suggestions prior to installing it? You bet I did. Maybe you've learned your lesson from this?

Zone alarm was just slow in getting the update out. They should have known, if I read this article right: http://securosis.com/2008/07/08/dan-kaminsky-discovers-fundamental-issue-in-dns-massive-multivendor-patch-released/ Just go to ZA and get the new version. http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

It must have been a very simple fix because it was released 12-24(depending on what ZA product was installed) hours after the problem was identified -- Rick Fargo, ND N 46°53'251" W 096°48'279" Remember the USS Liberty http://www.ussliberty.org/
