Guest kraut Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 I have a Packard Bell from when they were sold in the US that came with 98se and USB ver 1. The system runs good yet and does what I need it too. The only thing is that it would be nice to have USB ver 2. Is it possible and not too much trouble to change it to USB ver 2?? TIA
Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Re: Win 98se USB ver 1 to ver 2 update question For Windows 98 SE (but NOT the original 98), you simply add a USB2 card. Just make certain that Windows 98 SE drivers are supplied. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a motherboard from a machine like the one described be unable to support the speed of USB 2, even if you somehow found drivers for it? USB2 is backwards compatible with 1.1 and if your machine is that old (mine is even older), 1.1 will be enough of a treat, IMHO. I am pretty sure you can't buy anything that's not ver. 2 by now, cards or peripherals. -- [actual quote] thanatoid: So why did you decide you needed broadband? I could probably remove the card for modem but I use it if I ever need a backup plus I do not really know a lot about working on these so to remove it and do whatever I would have to get it done and it is too old a system for me to start monkeying with it and putting money into it. You could use an external serial modem in place of the internal one. That should cost peanuts in the second hand market. A cheap speed upgrade would be an AMD K6-2 450MHz CPU. Use the x2 CPU clock multiplier setting (this translates to 6x) and an FSB speed of 75 MHz. You may be lucky and find an AMD K6-3 that works with your motherboard. Alternatively, overclocking your existing CPU would cost you nothing. You could try 75 MHz x 5 (375 MHz) or 75 x 5.5 (412 MHz) or 66 x 6 (400 MHz, use the 2X setting). You might need to bump up the CPU core voltage a little if the system becomes unstable. The jumper settings in the manual appear to follow a binary pattern with JP1 being the least significant bit and JP4 the MSB. Based on this assumption, I have added those settings marked with an asterisk. Thanks for suggestions but I haven't the slightest idea what you are talking about. As I said above I know about programs but when it comes to system forget it. Anything done in the box it has to go to the shop. Use as is or new system is what I have to decide now. Thanks all.
