While trying to upgrade from Kaspersky 6 to 9 I received the following message-

Error 1606 could not access network location @:systemroot%\system32

When I tried to remove the Kaspersky 6 the same error massage displayed. I

can't find this particular type of 1606 error in the Microsoft database. I

have run four different registry cleaners without success. Is this a Registry

problem? I have looked in the Registry (very scary) and there are a mass of

Kaspersky keys in there.

Re: Error 1606

Why you should not use a registry cleaner:

Dump the registry cleaner

The information in this link may offer a solution:

I know nothing about Kaspersky, and can't help with your problem, but

I urge you to stay away from Registry Cleaners.

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the

registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and

don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and

what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,

having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously

removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit

it may have.

Download this Zip file and then Reboot your machine and log into safe mode.

Run the Zip in safe mode and then Reboot your machine to Normal Mode and run

the ccleaner download from here:

http://www.ccleaner.com

ZIP file kiskav6remove.zip:

http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/kis6/kiskav6remove.zip

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

Try the Upgrade oe a clean install of KSP 9, does it work?

Scan for malware from here:

SuperAntispyware - Free

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm?s_cid=sah

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

Run this command if the above didn't help:

sfc /scannow

Reboot your machine and see if the error will appear.

HTH.

Thanks for the advice Gerry. I have used Registry Mechanic for years without

a problem but the site your mentioned on cleaners really gave me a jolt. The

key thing being one contributer who raised the point that no one source could

possibly know the details for all software.

Unfortunately the other reference does not help.

They now have an updated removal tool which does all of the old KP programs and don't supply the one you mentioned any more.

and the new version is now installed without having to use any other

software. Again many thanks to you and all the others who contributed. It's a

great forum.
