I am going to sell my pc to a friend with loads of software i have on it. I

want to deactivate my xp & he has his own registered product key (5 PC

License). I dont want to reformat pc & cant seem to slipstream SP3 onto it

as the CD doesn't have SP1 on it. I dont have the cd's to allot of the

installed sofware. Is there a way to do this so when he boots it up he need

to enter his product key? Its windows XP Pro & has SP3 in it. I was told its

simple & googling it gave me incorrect info.

Thanks

I believe you can 'slipstream' SP3 onto the CD - I do not believe the SP1

requirement matters for integration into the CD - just for installation onto

a computer (SP1 or higher.) Reguardless - you could integrate SP1a and then

integrate SP3. ;-)

Did the Windows XP come pre-installed on the system in question or did you

buy it retail-boxed in a store/online? If it is OEM - it goes with the

computer and there is no need for your friend to waste one of his licenses

on it - as it comes with one and you could not keep the copy/license of

Windows XP without keeping the entire machine.

As far as him changing the product key - easily accomplished - unnecessary

if the above is true, however.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for

users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key

to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a

reinstall!

Likely - what should occur - is a complete format of the computer in

question with his own stuff after you pass ownership of the physical machine

to him. He can choose to use one of his licenses *or* install using his CD

and then change the product key on the machine to the one on the sticker on

the machine by using the above advice. Of course - that implies the version

(Home, Professional, Media Center, etc) he has licenses for is the same as

the one installed upon your machine.

Re: Need to Deactivate my XP Pro

Get the Product Key from the new owner and change it yourself.

This freeware utility has the ability to display the product keys for the OS and

the Office suite. It can also be used to change the product key of a Windows XP

system:

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

I've used it myself to change a Product Key. It took two system restarts before

it behaved correctly.
