Guest Michael Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I will be setting up a small office remotely and a server. we have a working WAN link on our network and also we have a desktop support person at the other end to assist with the server setup - what questions should we ask to determine the tasks required? Thanks
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Re: remote server installation Hello Michael, If you will install a server for a remote site, please specifiy what you like to have there. Should it only be a files server, how many users will be there, what should the users be aible to do? Guest Michael Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Re: remote server installation Hi Meinolf, Thanks for your help. Do we need to setup a domain controller at that small office? There are about 20 staff at that office, and we have a working WAN link on our network. Thanks "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > Hello Michael, > > If you will install a server for a remote site, please specifiy what you > like to have there. Setting up your server remotely with help from an on-site tech is possible, but why not just build the server yourself in the main office & then ship it to the remote office location?
Guest Meinolf Weber Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Re: remote server installation Hello Michael, A local DC on that site has the advantage's for users, that they can login to the domain even if the WAN link is broken, it can be faster for them instead of logging on via WAN link. So if your connection is gone, for whatever reason they can work as normal, ofcourse without access to resources in your main site. Even if you have technican in that site you have ofcourse to think about, if she/he is aible to manage a DC, or if you let her/him only be the manager for the site, so only delegate rights for the tasks she/he should be aible to do. So i think you have to plan what the users in the site should be aible to do, to have and then plan the resources you will provide in the site. Guest Michael Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Re: remote server installation Hi Lanwench, Thanks for your support. I can build the one server at main office and ship it to remote office. But what questions should we ask the desktop tech to determine the server setup properly at remote office? I'm presuming you've got AD and this will be a server in your domain (if this is a remote site it should really be a DC/DNS server as well). You can remote into it once it's up and running. > > "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" wrote: > >> Michael <Michael@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >>> I will be setting up a small office remotely and a server. we have >>> a working WAN link on our network and also we have a desktop >>> support person at the other end to assist with the server setup - >>> what questions should we ask to determine the tasks required? >>> >>> Thanks >> >> I'm not sure how to answer that question as written. No, but I would. Statics are a pain, and dynamic DNS updates tend to work better if Windows is handling DHCP services. > > "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" wrote: > >> Michael <Michael@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >>> Hi Lanwench, >>> >>> Thanks for your support. >>> I can build the one server at main office and ship it to remote >>> office.
