I decided to try and repair XP willing to give up all my data and programs and reinstall them if that was what it took since program after program became unstable. It was a true domino problem going on. When printer and Music Match failed, I said uncle. I reinstalled XP via the 7 disk backup I made when I first got the computer although I only needed one disk apparently. I downloaded directly from DVD drive by changing BIOS temporarily (in case anyone is also looking to do same I am including the method) and then hit the R key despite warnings that it might erase everything or might not. Apparently all my data and programs came thru and it was a repair and NOT a restore. One has to be very careful here. Several programs are a little touchy and need reloading but the install programs were still in a folder so it presented no problem, and the bottom line is that everything is working fine now. I hated downloading a minimum of 175 updates to XP but stopped short of downloading SP3 since that might have been my original downfall. Not sure what got corrupted or how but wanted to thank you for pointing me in the right direction. JP

[You errantly included "PA Bear [MS MVP] wrote" in your reply to yourself, for some reason.] Thread history: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/b78f1dd9b10ca7f2 If you had to install a minimum of 175 updates, the Repair Install must have left you with WinXP Gold (no Service Packs); in which case, you could have (1) installed WinXP SP2 manually and then (2) WinXP SP3, avoiding a lot of unnecessary work and saving quite a bit of HDD space. I very much doubt that SP3 itself was your "downfall." However, the state the machine was in when you attempted to install it or the way that you installed it might have been a factor. You have until 14 Apr-09 to obtain free support for SP3 installation and compatibility issues. (See my previous reply.) You have until 14 Apr-10 to get SP3 installed; after that, you will not be offered any further security updates. Good luck in your continuing endeavors. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/
