I can get access to Google earth and from the 'web' tab, access Yahoo mail

but little else.

IE cannot access a URL, not will Opera but the connection is there. I have

tried everything, including the Winsock fix. I can ping and traceroute etc

but cannot get directly to a URL

Could really do with some help please. My email address (which I can pick up

on my desktop) is highbridgesb@yahoo.co.uk

What IE version you have and windows version?

Unexplained computer behaviour may be caused by deceptive software

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

"Internet Explorer stops responding, stops working, or restarts"

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro

Go through these Cleaning steps:

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies

by doing this:

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet

Connections >> Double click Internet Options.

On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:

General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |

Advanced

Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:

[&] Browsing

[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non

Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the

culprit and update it or remove it.

How to manage Add-Ons:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256

Scan for malware from here:

SuperAntispyware - Free

http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm?s_cid=sah

http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-gb/default.htm

Run a scan from here on-line:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Download Avast Cleaner (offline scanner) from here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Open a run command and type in:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 oleaut32.dll click [OK]

regsvr32 browseui.dll click [OK]

netsh winsock reset Click [OK]

Reboot your Computer and try the links.

How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

=Power or unplug the Power cord for the Router/Modem for about 40 seconds or

so be generous with it <g> turn the computer OFF and wait for the time to go

by!!

Then Turn the Router/Modem ON and wait a minute or so then Power ON the

computer and try to establish a connection and try the links or any link,

does it work?

HTH.

Do you really want to trust someone that was banned from posting

directly to Microsoft Usenet servers, someone that has posted links to

pornographic materials on HIS WEBSITE, who's website is in the MVP HOST

Block list, and who provides a tool for your use that will block access

to reputable anti-malware sites without telling you he's doing it?

And do you really want to trust someone that has had to change their

posting identity after being busted by MS as a fake MVP?

Might be the Zone Alarm fiasco.

Re: Internet access from an XP Pro laptop (wireless)

If you have ZoneAlarm installed first uninstall it, reboot, that will re

estabilish your internet connection.

Then go to Zonealarm website, download the latest version 7.0.483.000 and

that will fix the problem.

The problem was due to the Windowns Security Update KB951748 and previous

version ZoleAlarm interaction.

Sorry - I am limited with what I can access - as described in the question so

unfortunately, I haven't progressed. Perhaps I should reinstall XP - but it

came pre-installed! Is there likely to be a recovery partition or anything

like that?
