Strange, Dell says this is not almost new. They only have XP and 2000 listed on the support page. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D610&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

If this were almost new it would be Windows 7. XP is quite dated.

What OS do you have on it Yockie?

Just in case anyone wants to know this is a laptop.

OK it's probably been used and they reinstalled XP which would put it back to where it appears to be new.

Did you install the Audio SIGMATEL STAC 975X AC97 drivers from the link I gave you?

Yes, last evening I was there, on the same website you gave me today, and I updated all drivers. Nothing happened, no sound.

A lot of possibilities here then.

Go to device manager. Typing devmgmt.msc in the run box should get you there.

Go to sound controllers or similar and look for any problems. You need to expand that section. Do you see any yellow marks?

It's also possible that Dell used a different mobo/sound chip. Dell has been known to substitute parts.

Check audio properties in the control panel and speaker options from the system tray to see if it is muted.

Yes, I actually have done all you said - checked are they muted, check the device manager ( seemed ok to me, but then again what do I know...), and unzipped the files which got from Dell help website. BUT - I did not download ALL of the drivers from there, only some which were recommended, not the optional ones, and also I am not very educated about the device manager and although been there- Im not sure what I did really...have to run now, CU around 3 p.m, tnx

Hi your looking for a black exclamation mark next to the sounds icon in device manager.

To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

Once there find the sounds Icon then see if you have the black exclamation mark in a yellow triangle next to sounds if you have we can go from there in sorting your problem

No black exclamation mark in a yellow triangle, nothing like that. All seems good and normal. There are : audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, sigma tel C-major audio, video codecs. Thats all, no marks, no triangles.

Quick thread update I suggested to Yockie via a mail he try a set of head phones and they work , suggesting the laptop speakers themselves are at fault , further investigation continues

Thread update - its all done now, Armageddon is great helper, all investigated and fixed as far as possible, laptop speakers themselves are indeed at fault, but I can plug now outside speakers and use the laptop as needed. Very needed additional suggestions provided by Armageddon.

THANKS AGAIN, what a great place is this forum!
