I think ps3 supports jpeg tiff gif png bmp files. The dat files are probably related to saved games and such.

Try using Windows to search the usb for the above file formats.

Thank you for your help, i tried but failed..... Isnt their a program with which i can extract the .dat ? Im pretty sure the ps3 compresses because my hard drive had 23gb on it but it squeezed it to 8gb... Please tell me what kinda extractor to look for and again , thank you for your help =D

Files like jpeg and gif ARE compressed picture files. DAT files are data files which would be text or binary based.

If it's text a text editor can open and read them. If it's binary then the original program that created them needs to be used.

Either way if you check the file size of a DAT file you will likely see that it is extremely small. Way too small to be a picture in any form.

This actually sounds like not everything was backed up.

There is another possibility. The ps3 backup utility may be just for the purpose of backing up for your ps3 or for transfer to another ps3. The contents may be encrypted so that a computer can't read them, only a ps3. This may also explain 8gb.

What might work is using the usb stick on a different ps3 and run the backup to transfer everything over. Take a look at this from the manual. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.html

•Some types of backed up data can be restored on another PS3™ system. The types of data that can be restored on another system are as follows:

- Saved data from PlayStation®3 format software *1

- Saved data for minigames ("minis")

- Saved data for PSP™Game software

- Image files under (Photo)

- Music files under (Music) *2

- Video files under (Video) *2

- Bookmarks added under (Internet Browser)

The next thing to do is COPY the pictures back to a usb stick so a computer can read them. eHow link here. http://www.ehow.com/how_5954515_back-up-playstation-pictures-computer.html

Not that I know of. You could try a game shop that deals with used games and devices. You might be able to persuade them to do it on one of their used machines. Especially if you tell them what is on there.

I don't have a ps3. I'm an Xbox guy. I would have suggested pulling the drive but if it's like an Xbox it's formatted for the device and not a computer. The bottom line is you need a ps3 I'm afraid.

Further to Randy's excellent suggestions the other alternative would be a friend who has a PS3, after all, all you want is to rescue photo's so a good mate would be pleased to help I would have thought.
