DNS problems

Hello,

I have a client machine that is currently suffering from DNS issues.

I can ping addresses internal to the domain as well as external in the

cloud by IP only. when I try to ping by hostname the request times

out.

The client is MS XP and the server is MS Server 2003.

-I can successfully ping the DNS servers by IP from the client.

-I cansuccessfully ping the client by hostname from another laptop on

domain.

-I have tried to manually put in the DNS Servers vice having the client

search for automatically, does not work.

-flush DNS, does not work

-register DNS, does not work.

The client can surf webpages but cannot check Outlook which I beleive

may be due to the fact he cannot see the exchange server by name.

Can anyone offer suggestions on what other steps I can take to resolve

this?

RE: DNS problems

This problem occurs when the windows update had installed the update KB951748.

And what security software are you using on the computer, Because that

update has some DNS issues with the Zone Alarm Software.

If you have ZA - Set ZoneAlarm to Medium security setting or remove ZoneAlarm.

I don't know what is causing the actual problem you are experiencing but you

might want to give the DNS program Treewalk a try. It's freeware and does

clear up many DNS related problems.

It can be located at http://ntcanuck.com/

Another thought... If the client is using the Zone Alarm firewall one of

Microsoft's latest updates causes the program to refuse access to the

internet at normal settings. Zone Alarm reportedly has an update on their

web site to fix the problem.

Re: DNS problems

Zone Alarm firewall is not being used on the client or anywhere in the

domain.

Any other ideas?

RE: DNS problems

Did you check whether the update KB951748 is installed on the XP CLient.

If it does then uninstall it from add/remove program.

More ideas:

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

There is now an update to ZA which resolves this problem, v 7.0.483.000.
