Guest Crystalprimesourcedesign Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I tried the end of last week to download Windows XP service pack 2. I needed to do this before I upgraded to Quickbooks Pro2008. The process took over a hour and a half before I had to leave the office. Left the computer on over the weekend. Came in this morning the computer was frozen. Cancel out of the install, (it did not complete) and the computer rebooted itself. Now the computer reboots after it gets to the window XP screen. Error message on the second screen: Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM - Bootable CD Does Not Exist.... Is there anyway to stop the computer from doing this loop? I am ready for a new computer, but I would like to get into this to get some files burned to CD. Am I just dreaming?

Am I just dreaming? Try system Restore by Going to Safe Mode and perform the procedure from there. Restore to before the download of SP2 took place then download the Standalone one and save on CD from here: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434 How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449/ HTH. nass --- http://www.nasstec.co.uk
Guest Crystalprimesourcedesign Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 RE: Bootable CD Does Not Exist Thanks for the post. I can't get it into safe mode. I pick it as a option, the computer thinks about it and then it just starts back with the loop. Power off, and go into the BIOS and check the boot settings and that the CD appears properly. Is there actually a CD in the drive? > > Is there anyway to stop the computer from doing this loop? > > I am ready for a new computer, but I would like to get into this to get > some > files burned to CD. Am I just dreaming? There's no need to get into this system to recover the files. Get a $20 USB2 drive case or adapter, remove the drive, attach it to the case, plug that into another running XP system. Copy your files off. At most, you will have to Take Ownership. (google Take Ownership XP). You will likely need to manually remove SP2, and reinstall it, but not from WIndows Update. Download the whole file, and run the installer from that downloaded version. Google "XP SP2 IT" to find this; it's about 250 meg. Methods for removing SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/875350 HTH -pk
