setup.exe won't run

Clean install of xp home (have also tried xp professional). When I insert a

cd it won't autoplay. If I open the cd in explorer and then double click on

setup.exe a hourglasss apears for a brief moment and then nothing happens.

Other exe files in my system32 directory run fine.

I ran the autofix utility and it reported problems but it doesn't say what

they are. There are two dvd drives and the same thing happens with both. If I

copy the setup files to my hard drive nothing happens also.

I don't have much hair and I'm about to pull some out. How can I resolve

this issue?

Re: setup.exe won't run

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel

Click the Advanced tab

Scroll all the way to the bottom and look for 'Security'

Is the 'Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer' checked ?

If not, check it, then click Apply, OK

Now right click My Computer, either on the Desktop or on the Start Menu,

and choose Manage

Click the plus sign next to Storage; then Removable Storage; then the

plus sign next to Libraries

Right click each problematic drive and choose Properties

Make sure the 'Enable drive', on the bottom right of the window, is

checked. If they're not, check them and click Apply, OK.

Did that resolve the issue ?

If the issue is "I want to do a clean install" then set the CD-Drive as the

boot device in the computer's BIOS.

Otherwise, you're asking the operating system (which is running) to commit

suicide (by installing over itself). It may not be too keen on that idea.

I did as you instructed with no change. It's intersting that this happened

on both a clean install of Windows Professiona and Home. Exe's not named

setep.exe load and run fine; I was able to install a couple of games for my

son with no problem. Why won't they run?
