I just got done with a new install of Winxp and installed

the software that came with the Dell Laptop which was

PowerDVD and Sonic Record Now and I installed a wireless

pcmcia card [belkin].

I used LanSpy to check for open ports.

Lanspy said that these ports are open:

21 ftp

25 smtp

110 pop3

119 nntp

143 imap4

Can someone advise to why these ports are open on my laptop?

Thanks

Is it normal to have those ports after a new install?

Please advise and thanks.

Yes.

I've also answered your somewhat alarming post in Security newsgroup. Did

you take care of everything here yet? =>

Something tells me this is not the whole story. Please go grab

CurrPorts and download it to your desktop. Reboot and detail what

ports and status (Listening / Established) you see listed in the

"State" column. The applications or system processes associated will

be seen to the left.

None of those ports should be open by default. What is the version /

service pack level of XP?

that's not normal. On a regular XP system.

And prob still very odd on a Dell system too. I wouldn't expect any

more ports open on a Dell system. A bare minimum one.

I have set up a Dell System

They come with 2 CDs.

A Dell win xp CD(takes a Dell serial number), and a driver CD.

I seriously doubt that would leave those ports open.

You should set it up again and check at which stage all those ports

suddenly appear open..

You don't need to scan from another machine..or use 3rd party

software.

netstat -aon will show open ports.

AND the PIDs of the processes that use those ports

do CTRL-ALT-DELETE (to bring up task manager), then view..select

columns..PID.

And you can see the PID along with the process. You can sort by

alphabetical order. The tasklist command would list processes with

PID too.

So you can identifiy what is using it.

And BY THE WAY.

If you turn the windows firewall on, then when scanning from another

machine with your program, you won't find any ports open. Because it

won't see any from outside the machine.
