shepherdess Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Ok. I started with IRQL equal or less etc memory dump BSOD happening on a fairly regular basis. Next, I got up one morning to find "No signal detected" on the monitor and eventually realised that the pc "thinking light" was no longer flashing. Oddly, we werent getting any "beeps" from the MB. I toddled off to a pal with my pc to borrow his psu. He also had a few tricks with the BIOS batterry etc, still nothing and no beeps with the ram removed. My next trick was to buy a CPU, fitted and pasted it. Turned on...some thinking lights and one continuos tone with ram removed. Still no booting though, even with peripherals unplugged. What now? Any ideas Quote
KenB Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Hi, Switch off at the wall - leave the plug in to maintain the earth ( ground ) connection. Disconnect the monitor and the printer - and any other external hardware. With a known good PSU connected and everything stripped off the m/board ( RAM / Sound / Video cards etc. ) Disconnect the Hard Drive and DVD CD ROM power connections and also the data cables at the m/board end. Leave ONLY the 24 way connector from the PSU connected. Switch on at the wall and try to boot. You should get POST beeps. If you do - this is good. Put the hardware / connections back one at a time and test boot after each one. (the beep pattern may change but it should still POST) Do this until the problem is replicated - you have identified the problem hardware. Put RAM in one at a time. If you get no POST beeps when it is stripped down unscrew the m/board ( don't lose the stand-offs ) Sit it on a piece of card / newspaper and try booting again. If it POSTs this time there was a short between the m/board and the case. Look for lose screws or even a buildup of dust. If you get no POST beeps at all you have a problem with eithere the PSU or the m/board. As you say the PSU is known to be good - you have a problem with the m/board specifically.
