Hi all,

I am banging my head off the wall here..

I have a HP G62 laptop running windows 7

Today I turned it on and it went to the windows log in screen..I tried to type in password and half the keys dont work and also the enter key.

Normally I would go into bios, safe mode etc but when I hit the F keys every possible option needs me to hit the enter key..I cant find any that will boot me straight through to safe mode or the bios etc...even if i get into the bios I cant use the enter key and the only working key thats used in the bios is the right arrow

Ive tried plugging in a usb keyboard and the keys are exactly the same so im sure its not a damaged keyboard.

I read on another forum if you take the battery out and power lead then hold in the power lead this does some kind of a reset but nothing happens/changes.

Please help

thanks

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

It should be hold or push in the power button with the power lead disconnected and the battery removed.

However, did this just happen, was everything OK previously?

Have you downloaded any files recently from the net?

Can you manage to run a scan with your anti-virus if you have one on?

What security software do you have, as in firewall, anti-virus or other anti-spywares etc?

It does sound a lot like some sort of virus or malware at the moment.

Hi Nev,

I have tried the removing battery, power lead and holding down power button (at least a minute) 3 times and no luck

I havent really used this laptop and definitely havent downloaded anything on it for months or installed anything..I know some viruses can be timed etc mind you.

Ive got Malwarebytes on all my pcs.

Its not possible for me to run an anti virus because only about 20% of the keyboard works and no enter key...the enter key is the main problem as I would be able to work this problem out if it worked.

HP are telling me to buy a recovery disk..the trouble is im not sure if this will boot automatically as I dont have an enter key..I cant get into the bios and tell it to boot from CD rom either as they keys dont work so this could be a problem also

Can you do anything with the mouse pad, or even a USB separate mouse?

If no virus is present, it could be the keyboard drivers faulty, but to get to device manager and go looking is going to be difficult as it does involve typing, however if a mouse will work OK, then copy and pasting is one way of short cutting letter and number keys that aren't working, Can you get at least that far, or not?
