hope Adobe personell read this;;;;;;;;;

how Weak of you to deny certain computer users of the necessary, Adobe product........ even

though it is free, you deny win98 users knowing full well they will have to 'update' to 'something',

in order to utilise a .pdf. (ps,,,, i Hate pdf's) (ie,, forcing them to 'update' to xp or 2000

or nt or vista,,, and no, i dont give a damn that i typed them out of order... )

today, a friend, non-computer user, brought to me a second-hand 'set top box' so he could tune into

the newer high definition channels on the telly,, but he doesnt have a manual on how to plug what

into what.

i said i would download a manual,,,, but then i ran into ADOBE,,,,,, sure, they got it,,,,

but they wont give it to a win98 user..... what weasels they are,;;;;;;;; i hope they

go broke and the legs of their children all get cancer and rot in front of their own eyes..

what gives adobe the right to dictate what i can or cannot read????

are they so lame that they cant keep up with technology and supply 98 too?

dick-heads!!!!

i spent hours trying to d/l a version that would accept my friends manual, nah,, not even in the

bloody race,,, not one version of adobe was available ...... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

how stoooopid your marketers are,, (and we all know you are making money from your 'free' adobe

reader) because by denying 98 users, you are denying thousands of humans who have wallets.......

what silly ppl you are.

Personally,,, i just think you are pathetic/

The answer is intellectual property viz. copyright. Whether they sell

the software or give it away free, as proprietors Adobe can set the terms

of that sale or gift. Of course this may alienate non-customers: but only

if it alienates potential paying customers is Adobe likely to respond.

That is the way the market is supposed to work, just as you and I are

free to program and distribute PDF readers of our own.

Nonsense...all you have to do is get *another* program to read pdf files.

yes, there are others - like Foxit Reader.

This place is like an 'information giving pool',, rather than just give the product, they

insist on information information information,, all concerning the downloader..... in other words,

the person wishing to download.

Still not happy.

Maybe something got lost in translating my post..... I went to the place where the manual was that

my friend needed, then clicked on download, but a half an hour passed while my 'dun' meter was still

as active as two bunnies in a field, then it bloody froze up on me. My next step was to go to

Adobe, but only to find that they couldnt give two hoots about a consumer,, but rather gave two

hoots about the operating system a consumer was using..... I am gathering this is to do with

big-business and some sort of underhanded agreements made between ceo's of companies forcing the

average joe to purchase later versions of microsoft windows. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Why do these peopel care what operating system I use? Isnt advertiseing their primary objective?

By cutting me off, they lose my eyes veiwing their products...... and lets face it, all I

wanted was a simple piece of paper outlining how to set up a 'set-top-box' for my friends

television. I have no idea why people even consider using Adobe,,, Microsoft word is so much

better and so much easier and so well known,,,, why didnt the manual come in dot.doc format,,

something we All understand.

Hey, if you really want to do us a favour and help, then can you download the bluddy thing so I can

fetch it from you? It is the manual for a 'HVBT-1800' The brand name is 'OLIN'. the

place to download it is " http://olinstyle.com/support.php "

Screen shot attached.

And if you can download it, can you get it in .DOC format, please. I say this because it seems

obvious that my Adobe Reader (cough cough) may not even be able to read some simple text or maybe

jpg's ..... if they were kind enough to supply them to assist a user without a manual.)

Okay,,,, NOW I feel better. (still despise Adobe, and also wonder why the world endeared

itself to them,, when WORD itself is a powerful program and understood by most.... maybe I am

just a Homer.)

I was just thinking how I would go about it if I had the wherewithall to do this task,, and I

believe the best way to help would be to go fetch the dot.pdf (grrrrr) then copy and paste it into a

Word document and post it back.... does that sound feasable? There would surely be jpg's

involved within the 'manual/instructions' in order to show the user which plugs to plug into what

given the type of television too,, but I cant see any problem in making it happen.

Try right clicking the link and choose "Save Target As".

NEVER use a PDF reader online [which is what was happening when you

normally clicked the pdf link] unless that is the only way to view it

[protected pdf].

Download the pdf, disconnect from the Internet, and make sure the pdf is

safe. Many now contain JAVA and other scriptingand inclusions which will

connect to sites on the Internet which you will not notice or be able to

control if you have done the viewing online, and/or can be used to install

things on your computer or network. [see the various security bulletins

related to this.]

Investors see this as their way to make money and they DEMAND a substantial

Conversion of a copyrighted PDF [all are copyrighted, even those under GNU

or other] MAY/WILL fall outside the law if offered in total online. Your own

private conversion for *your personal use* comes under "fair use". Excerpts

{small/short} MAY be allowed online, however they must be carefully linked

to the original site/pdf and/or noticably referenced to the original

The MS Word format is NOT a good format for online usage or offer. It can

be used to transfer macros, scripting, and other embedded activities which

can not be adaquately protected against [disabling macros doesn't provide

complete protection]. For review of these issues, note the number of MS

Office based updates and hotfixes that have been issued by MS, and the

recommendations to completely disallow and/or strictly monitor these

products on many security/firewall sites/discussion groups.

I'm not overly happy with Adobe either, particularly as the products are

delving deeper into private systems and have become essential tools for

hackers/crackers.

BTW: Adobe Reader for 98 ends at version 6.06. If you intend to use it,

make sure you do the updates, they are around 1 to 3 megs apiece.

Re: Adobe SUCKS

1. Try this: http://grystmill.com/shared/AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe For some

reason, my site is insisting on proper case for the letters. Not supposed to

do that. (But after some of the BS my host has been pulling lately, I figure

I have to change hosts, anyway.)

1A. You didn't try FoxIt?

2. When downloading a PDF, DO NOT just click on it. Right-click it and "Save

Target As", then save it to your Desktop (or wherever.) The Adobe PDF

plug-in for browsers is horrible on older machines and always has been. In

fact, I used to (and sometimes still do) turn that feature off (forget where

the switch is, though) so that when I click on a PDF download link, it acts

like an EXE or other download, asking to be saved, etc. Once it's

downloaded, then I open it.

3. As for you specific download, did you already have some form of Adobe

Reader installed when you tried it, so that it was trying to D/L and open in

the browser at the same time? Or are you on dial-up or something? In any

case, the download link for the PDF worked fine for me, and using the

instructions I gave you, it should work fine for you. I'm not in the habit

of doing things for other people that they aren't perfectly capable of

learning how to do for themselves. Try again, following my instructions, and

then if you still can't get it, I'll see what I can do for you, though I'm a

bit harried today.

Re: Adobe SUCKS

I suspect that the "runtime" version of "Adobe Reader" is a major security

risk.

Despite wading through all its' menus, a hwile ago, and switching off its'

"update" feature, it KEEPS trying to get out onto the web, usually to its'

home site, and despite creating permanent firewall rules to block it -

....it seems to be coded to keep trying alternative methods / ports ?

I've just waded through them again (Adobe v 8.?) and there's all sorts of

rubbish to do with html, javascript, ...media-players !!

I'm going to trawl through and locate all Adobe reader files, particularly

*.exe and permanently block them in my AVG firewall applications list. !

It's really pretty simple...

1. Install Foxit

2. Set Foxit as default PDF reader

3. Click on a PDF

4. Read PDF

To all, (and thanks) forgive my non-reply,, forgot about a w/end away from computer.

Gary,, I did download the Adobe you sent me to, and I have it sitting in a folder.

Thing is, while I was downloading it friday, I also read the post from RJK, and havent yet

executed it.. plus this is my first time back at my own pc.

No, not yet, but will be heading there directly after I post this... especially after reading

other posts on the subject; it does sound like Fox is the way to go,, hope so, because

I am treading water at this stage. (yet still only trying to get a simple document.)

That is the crux of the problem, as Adobe goes into 'Adobe-mode' when I try and download

the document,, it just wants me to download its newer version, knowing full well I am using

windows 98,, then it makes my computer freeze during download.

The Adobe PDF

Not sure what you mean here. Yes, I do have a version of Adobe, 5.0 I think.

It has always opened pdf's prior,, but it sure doesnt want me to get that users

manual. (stupid bluddy Adobe)

Or are you on dial-up or something?

Yes, I am on dial up, as I mentioned before. (and the place you directed me to was for

a 16MB download,, I did it friday night then went to bed.)

In any

Yes, I followed your instructions,, as odd as they seem. One minute you are telling

me to download Adobe (16MB) and then you are telling me to get Fox?

I guess I am a little confused, but after the post I read from RJK, I am also a bit wary. I

find it hard to believe I have to go through all of this drama/trauma just for an instruction sheet,

would be easier to open a chinese fortune cookie and read whats inside.

Thanks anyhow.

You make it seem sooooooo simple dadiOH,, but what about the fact that I cant down load the

damn file in the first place?

Anyway,, I am back at the computer and downloading Foxit as I type, I also downloaded the Adobe

that Gary mentioned, and it is in a folder un-touched since friday night.

I still find it hard to believe I have to go to all this trouble just to get what I want,, any one

would think I was trying to get into 'nasa'.

Thanks for input, I will post back after work tomorrow with results.

Okay, then as others have suggested there are alternatives. It does not help

to continue ranting about Adobe although it may make you feel good and I am

guilty as charged as far as my rants go in the past. Please let us try and

be professional in this newsgroup and also please stay with the original post

so we don't have too many threads out there with the same topic. It confuses

me and it makes the newsgroup look sloppy, imo. Have you contacted Adobe

with your concerns and told them you are not using their software any longer

and you are going to an alternative to read *.pdf files because you are

annoyed at their poor software?

Re: Adobe SUCKS

Wow. Oldie you need to take a pill. It is not Adobe's or anyone else's

fault that you are still on Windows 98 with Adobe 5.0 and then wonder

why it won't work. technology advances at blistering speeds and yes it

can be annoying when you buy a piece of electronic equipment and by the

next week it's out dated. but really, windows 98 is 10 years old. It's

time to upgrade... Adobe, like any software company in this day, is

developing software for the platforms and hardware that exist NOW.

Still, you have been given direct links to older versions and

alternative software and you still complain. If you get this upset over

downloading a manual, my you must have a hard time in life.

True, advice but the real question is of Windows 98 internal safety compared

to the external security of Windows XP (9x and NT -- see wikipedia if you

want) and especially Windows Vista which I did security beta testing for

Microsoft as a volunteer. Please see Chris Quirke, MVP discussion about this

because he is well-informed.

Re: Adobe SUCKS

From oldie:

"Gary,, I did download the Adobe you sent me to, and I have it sitting

in a folder.

Thing is, while I was downloading it friday, I also read the post from

RJK, and havent yet

executed it.. plus this is my first time back at my own pc. "

I wonder how oldie can put any faith in what RJK has to say. I agree with

your assessment of the situation, Gary. Anyway, I am probably being

offensive to RJK but if it is the same RJK as in the past then I certainly

would not put much if any stock in what RJK has to say.

I really like your updated website now, Gary S. Terhune. It is so awesome.

Anyway, my one suggestion is about Adaware SE that I do not care for it

because it ended up trashing a system once when I ran it to correct things

and because of too many false positives in my workings with it and on my

dad's computer and his name is Ivan. Thanks again Gary for the updated site.

"AdAware SE is no longer being supported, but some have noted that if you

can obtain the application and get its last definitions update, it will at

least catch things that other apps might not." From Gary S. Terhune's

Security article

I would remove this or at least put a disclaimer about the problem(s) with

false positives with Adaware SE and that is just my two cents for what it is

worth.

They are not telling you to download Adobe (at least most of them aren't).

they are telling you to download the .pdf file you are trying to read - the

manual for a PVR or something, wasn't it? - rather than trying to read it

from inside your browser, and thern open it, from Windows Explorer or

similar. Depending on which you've installed most recently - Adobe or

Foxit - it will open in one of these; if it's Adobe, it is more likely to

say something like "there is a new version, do you want to get it", or

possibly even "this file was created with a newer version than me, some

things won't display right, do you want to get the new one" - but (AFAIK)

you can still say no. (Foxit tends to be less bother, and still renders most

of what's in most .pdf files. A PVR manual isn't likely to have anything

fancy in it anyway - might even just be scanned.)
