http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

is the link to the WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe executable that

you can store on a cd and can run later. I suggest you copy to the HD

then run.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2FCDE6CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E&displaylang=enis

the link to the ISO image that you burn a CD with.

xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso seems to be what you have.

If you burned it as an ISO and not just wrote it to a cd then you are on

track. Just put in the cd and in the root folder you will find the SP3

executable: WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe that you want to copy to

the HD and run.

The reason I say copy to the HD is that when I tried last week to update

my 3rd PC for the CD rom F:, it wanted to expand the exe to an F:\ temp

folder. And of course you can't write to a CD rom. So I finally

copied it to C: and then removed the CD and ran the exe. It extracted

to C:\ now. And worked too.

But I can't open the file when i click on it in the CD. Should I extract it

first.

Re: Windows XP SP3 CD

The file you downloaded is an "ISO" file.

You don't put this file on a CD.

You put in on your hard drive and when you click on it, it should open your CD burning program and

make an installation CD.

By the way, the Windows XP burning software will not work.

You will need a 3rd party burning software that works with ISO files.

Download the SP3 file and forget the ISO if that is too complicated for

you. It works!

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

An ISO is an image (like a zip file) of a CD. Its supposted to be

burned to a cd with a *specialized* program ('burn iso image') so that

it makes a cd with folders and files like any other CD. An ISO is an

easy way to send CDs from place to place. It also allows a bootable

CD to be recreated without jumping through hoops.

If you can read the CD you made now, and see the .iso file, it still

does not make it properly burned to the CD. You just saved it to a CD.

If you cannot burn an ISO image with RecordNow, then get imgburn or some

such freeware. http://www.imgburn.com/

Or download the SP3 in an EXE file.

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe is what you want.

The first thing you should do is make sure that you are not hiding file

extensions:

My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View

Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types."

Click OK.

Now, use Windows Explorer to see what exactly you burned to the CD:

My Computer | Double-click DVD/CD-RW Drive

What do you see?

Thus the reason we are giving you advice!

You just are not reading are you. You do not extract anything. An

ISO extension on a file needs to be burned to a CD with a ISO burning

software, (imgburn) or recordnow *if it has an image burn option*. Once

burned to the CD you will see *FILES*.

From there you can run the SP3.exe file.

That or download the SP3.exe file itself. You don't need the ISO.

Get the exe.

I'm outa here!

You did it wrong. had you done it correctly, you would instead see:

WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Since I am not familiar with RecordNow, I can't offer first-hand

experience with that particular program. But it seems you merely created

an ordinary data CD, copying the .iso *file* to it.

An ISO is a *complete image*. Instead of copying the file, you actually

need to write the actual image to the disk.

Actually, I just found a helpful page:

"Create a Data Disc Using an ISO Image File with HP RecordNow"

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=lpg40850&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=59855

Look at Figure 2. Does it look familiar? Did you follow all the

instructions on this page? Especially Step #6:

The following message will be displayed:

"You have selected a ISO image file. Would you like to create a disc

with the contents of this file?"

Click OK , and then click Next.

----------------------------------------------------

If for some reason, RecordNow just isn't working, CDBurnerXP is quite

capable of burning ISO images (and then some):

If the file you downloaded is an ISO image (has 'iso' extension), you

should use a CD writer software and choose to "burn image to CD".

One very good, free, and open source writer is InfraRecorder:

http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5

Here are a couple of videos that show how to burn an ISO image using

InfraRecorder:

Forgot to mention, you need to be logged in as an administrator to burn

CDs in XP. But others will correct me if I am wrong.

Now, if you would like to allow all users to burn discs (including

restricted users), then do as described here:

http://www.nch.com.au/kb/10008.html

The above link shows how to set permissions so that all users have burn

rights. Here is the procedure given in the link above:

---------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP

You can change the group policy settings to allow this. You must log on

as an Administrator user to change this setting.

1. Run gpedit.msc (via Start menu, Run..)

2. Select the following:

Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Windows

Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options

3. Enable the option 'Devices: Restrict CD-Rom access to locally

logged-on user only.'

You should now reboot your PC. Restricted users can now rip/burn CDs.

----------------------------------------------------------

Good luck.
